NSET meets with Partner Radios in Itahari
A group of radio journalists in eastern Nepal interacted intensively to help raise public awareness on disaster risk reduction through radios and mass media more in effective and organized ways. Role of radios was much stressed on the occasion in building safer communities and reducing potential losses from natural disasters.
“We are working on various social causes, this event has further encouraged community radio like us to learn how we can contribute save people’s lives and properties”, says Krishna Raj Shakya, Station Manager of Radio Khandbari, Sankhuwasabha.
National Society for Earthquake Technology – Nepal (NSET) facilitated a One-Day Regional Meeting with partner radios in the region. The participants from 8 radios in the east got oriented in various aspects of Disaster Risk Management. “This is an attempt as a part of NSET endeavors to enhance media engagement for building community resiliency – our experience says FM Radios scattered in various communities in Nepal are the one very effective medium to reach people with safety messages”, mentions Khadga Sen Oli, Advocacy and Outreach Manager, NSET.
The participants had also explored ways to serve people at the localities know risks and take initiatives for proper actions. Yamuna Khanal, Program Producer for weekly radio magazine on earthquake safety at Radio Samad, Lahan raised – its really challenging to find and promote good practices from local context where almost nothing has been done so far. Meena Khatiwada from Nepalbani FM stressed on the need of more input to journalists in various aspects of program production.
Keshav Bhattari from Radio Saptakoshi finds while reporting some lack of common understanding even amongst DRR actors while implementing similar program activities with lot variability creating somehow further dilemmas.
“Being from rapidly urbanizing VDC, we have yet more challenges” – highlights Gyanendra Niraula, Station Manager of Radio Sargam from Dhulabari, Jhapa. While other station managers Naina Bishwokarma from Radio Makalu FM, Dhankuta; Jibachchha Chaudhary from Radio Samad, Lahan and Chudamani Wagle from Radio Sarlahi and Chandra Ghimire from Saptakoshi FM, Itahari agree on the fact that problems and challenges are very much localized and people should be given with accurate and feasible remedies.
NSET Communication team; Khadga Sen Oli, Advocacy and Outreach Manager; Anil Upadhayay, Senior Media Officer and Laxmi Khanal, Media Officer are also visiting stations of Radio Makalu in Dhankuta, Radio Samad FM in Lahan, Radio Rudrakshya in Jaleshwor and Radio Sarlahi in Sarlahi to support radio teams encourage and engage in risk reduction initiatives.
