Interactive Presentation Session on
Nepal Bankers' Association (NBA) and NSET (Under 3PERM Program supported by USAID) in association with PARAMARSHAK organized an Interactive Presentation Session on "Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Plan for Banking Sector" at Hotel Annapurna, on May 30, 2014. Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), Dr. Yub Raj Khatiwada graced the session as the chief guest. Dr. Khatiwada in his remarks stressed on the utmost need of Institutionalization of Disaster Risk Reduction in the country.
Mr. Rajan Singh Bhandari, NBA president gave his welcome remarks and expressed his gratitude to all for being a part of the interactive session.
Dr. Amod Mani Dixit, Executive Director of NSET in his remarks highlighted the risk business in Nepal are facing today and the need of BCP for such associations. He also pointed out the need to set an example so that Business Continuity Planning (BCP) could flourish in every crucial organization so that the critical services would not be interrupted.
Mr. Roshan Regmi, representative of NBA, in his presentation mentioned about the present conditions of banks and their understanding of BCP, business recovery and disaster recovery. He also acknowledged the fact that there is a need of proper guidelines and understandings of the risks to which they are still to be clear upon. Such as structural risk, risk to employee and their family etc.
Mr. Surya Bhakta Sangachhen, program manager of 3PERM in his remarks briefed about the potential risk that we may have to bear if a big earthquake was to occur in the future. He pointed out how BCP would affect the business and banks relating to different real life examples of; Kobe 1995, Pakistan 2005, Gujarat 2001, Chile 2010 and Haiti 2010.
The session was followed by the presentation of Ms. Nikola Guetermann, BCM expert, representing Lootok Ltd. She gave an overview of the various components of a BCM Program, showing IT Recovery is only one of many. She also provided the audience with key points that need to be considered when developing BC Plans, including the assignment of roles and responsibilities and the development of business continuity strategies. She concluded raising the importance of the planning process involving constant exercising.
As banking sector is highly dependent on the IT resources the Executive Director of Paramarshak , Mr. Kiran Gautam made his presentation on the IT recovery. He explained step by step the procedure for IT recovery and also presented many ideas on key market trends in use so that the data can be backed up conveniently and efficiently.
There was a video summary presented towards the end which outlined the need, the methods, the strategy, the aim and the benefits of having a BCP for a good business to run. Deputy Executive Director of NSET Ramesh Guragain summarized the program and also encouraged the participating banks for taking an initiation. The floor was then open for discussion and the program was concluded with the closing remarks from Dr. Amod Mani Dixit, Executive Director of NSET.
