Disaster Resilient Communities in Nepal by 2050

NSET Workshop for Television Journalists


On Wednesday 5 November, the National Society for Earthquake Technology – Nepal (NSET) conducted a half-day workshop for Television Program Partners, including media personnel from All three Media house, Watchdog Media and Media Helpline. The workshop was conducted under the Public Private Partnership for Earthquake Risk Management program (3PERM).

NSET Deputy Executive Director, Surya Narayan Shrestha gave an introductory speech on Disaster Risk Management in NEPAL and NSET media priorities.  He discussed the importance for Media Partners to understand DRR and its impact, as well as the importance to propagate an accurate message so as not to create panic in the community. He also discussed the differences between rector scale and magnitude.

Director of Community based Disaster Risk Management; Bijay Krishna Upadhayay mentioned what has been conducted at local level capacity building for Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction.

Director of DPER Program, Ganesh Kumar Jimee discussed the activities and efforts of enhancing Emergency Response Capacity in Nepal.

Program manager of 3PERM, Surya Bhakta Sangachhe discussed the involvement of the Private Sector in Risk Reduction and Preparedness.

Director of EERT, Hima Shrestha spoke about Earthquake Engineering and Research in Nepal. Her presentation focused on earthquake vulnerability of hospitals in Nepal and need of mitigation.

Team Leader of GIS Office, Gopi Krishna Basyal shared information about database management systems in Nepal. He discussed the methodologies, processes and interpretations of DRR databases.

3PERM Media, Advocacy & Outreach Manager, Khadga Sen Oli talked about NSET Communication Philosophies, Practices and Strategies. He discussed NSET philosophies and activities that have been carried out to date Program.

Engineer of SESP Project, Ranjan Dhungl mentioned the School Earthquake Safety Program in Nepal and discussed the effective ways to reach communities through schools in ERR/DRR .

Program Engineer of BCIPN project, Dev Kumar Maharjan discussed the Building Code Implementation Program in Municipalities of Nepal. He mentioned that NSET is currently conducting a campaign on Improved Earthquake Disaster Resilience in Nepal.
 
From the participating journalists, Jagadish Kharel, Sunil Koirala and Shiva Shretsha shared their reporting experiences and put forward some queries relating to Disaster Risk Reduction.

To conclude the Workshop, NSET Deputy Executive Director, Surya Narayan Shrestha' addressed the queries of participants and closed what was a successful and informative day.
