Lions Disaster Preparedness Program in technical cooperation with NSET-Nepal
On Friday, 7th Nov 2014, The International Association of Lions Clubs, Nepal organized a "Lions Disaster Preparedness Program in technical cooperation with National Society for Earthquake Technology (NSET) - Nepal" at Atithi Banquet, Kathmandu, Nepal. This was a part of one of NSET's core initiatives to collaborate with rotary clubs in Nepal towards building disaster resilient communities.
Mr. Surya Bhakta Sangachhe, Program Manager (3PERM/NSET) and Mr. Amit K Shrestha, PPP-Specialist (3PERM/NSET) were present at the occasion representing NSET. Mr. Surya Bhakta Sangachhe made the opening presentation emphasizing earthquake threats, vulnerabilities and risk of fatalities and massive damages faced by Nepal. He discussed various earthquake disaster events such as Haiti (2010), Chili (2010) etc. and their relevance in Nepalese context. Mr. Sangachhe also explained many ways of earthquake preparedness, response and risk reduction activities in personal, family, private sector businesses and community levels. From the earthquake risk perspective, Nepal ranks 11th globally most vulnerable country and Kathmandu valley is placed in the first place in seismic vulnerability ranking. The focus was primarily on the activities that have to happen before, during and after an earthquake. At the end of the presentation, there was a 15 minutes Q&A session which was utilized to clarify the earthquake related technical queries and disaster preparedness concept/initiatives in community level.
The entire session was well received by over 50 participants mostly representing private businesses in Kathmandu. Various earthquake preparedness related flyers and brochures were distributed in the event. One hour interactive Disaster-Preparedness-Presentation session was followed by other Lions ceremonial events such as Induction, Charter Presentation and Installation ceremony of Lions Club of Kathmandu Himchuli. The program was sponsored by Lions Club of Kathmandu Heart in technical cooperation with NSET under promoting "Public Private Partnership for Earthquake Risk Management" Program (3PERM) supported by USAID/OFDA.
