28th Earthquake Safety Day – Jan 2026

𝟐𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐚𝐲 , 𝟏𝟔 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔(2082, Magh 2)

Nepal observed the 28th Earthquake Safety Day on 16 January 2026, reaffirming its commitment to earthquake awareness, preparedness, and resilience. The day is commemorated annually in memory of the devastating 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake, which caused widespread destruction and loss of life across Nepal and India.

The main day event was organized at Khula Manch, Kathmandu Metropolitan City, under the leadership of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) in coordination with NSET. The commemoration emphasized public awareness, preparedness at all levels, and collective responsibility to reduce earthquake risks. Nationwide activities included an Earthquake Memorial Meet at Kathmandu and Lalitpur, an awareness rally, the main day ceremony with high-level participation, and an exhibition on earthquake safety and disaster preparedness.

Since its inception, NSET has played a key role in institutionalizing the National Earthquake Safety Day (ESD). NSET was instrumental in establishing the national-level observance and continues to contribute strategically to its planning and implementation.

To date, NSET serves as the Member Secretary of the Earthquake Safety Day (ESD) Organizing Committee, supporting the Government of Nepal in coordination, technical guidance, and implementation to ensure the successful observance of the day. Through this role, NSET works closely with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority and other federal, provincial, and local stakeholders to promote earthquake awareness, safe construction practices, and community preparedness.
