Workshop for "Identification of Nepali Name and Punchline for DRR Mascot -Red Panda"
NSET with support from USAID/OFDA organized a workshop for Identification of Nepali Name and Punchline for DRR Mascot "Red Panda" from November 10-11, 2013 at
Dhulikhel Lodge Resort, Dhulikhel. The main purpose of this workshop was to "Nwaran" the "Habre" - identify and select by consensus Nepali NAME of DRR Mascot, the Red Panda and to develop a Punchline (Chukta, Tukka, bhutukkai parne tattwa) in Nepali to the mascot through a massive interaction among experts from the fields of Nepali literature & linguistics, comedy scribes, dramatology, fine arts, music and advertisements.
The modus operandi of the workshop was participative and idea-provoking; the workshop started with sharing of basic concepts and international practices and then proceeded to intensive brainstorming on the theme tasked to. The outcomes are to be consolidated next.
The USAID/DRO has identified "Red Panda" as the DRR Mascot. It is considered that promoting the mascot as the symbol of DRR will contribute greatly to disaster risk reduction in Nepal, a parallel is the "Smokey the Bear" the mascot that symbolize safety against wild fire in the USA. The "Smokey" has contributed significantly to promoting forest fire safety enhancement in the USA. It is believed that a use of a mascot for DRR blends well with Nepalese tradition of personifying different animals even to the ranks of gods.
