Strengthening Resilient and Green Education: Equipment Handover for Safer, Sustainable Schools in Kirtipur and Lalitpur
Safe and Green School equipment handover event took place on February 27, 2025, at Sustamanasthiti Bal Kalyan Vidhyalaya in Kirtipur and Madan Smarak Secondary School in Lalitpur. This event marked a crucial step in enhancing school safety and promoting green school initiatives. Through the provision of essential Search and Rescue (SAR) equipment and sustainable school promotion tools, the initiative aims to create safer and more environmentally responsible learning environments for students.
The generous donation of NPR 2,00,000 to handover the essential safe and green school equipment was made possible by Aditi Banjara and her team from the USA, aligning with the broader goals of the UNICEF-NSET project to strengthen climate change mitigation and adaptation capacities across Nepal.
At Sustamanasthiti Bal Kalyan Vidyalaya in Kirtipur 13 items were handed over which included dust masks, fire extinguishers, first aid boxes, multi-tool knives, stretchers, watering cans, waste segregation bins, compost bins, a wheelchair, walking canes, diapers, pads, and blankets. Meanwhile, at Madan Smarak Secondary School in Lalitpur 23 items were handed over which included safety goggles, helmets, dust masks, safety whistles, leather gloves, kneecaps, blankets, plastic buckets, fire extinguishers, first aid boxes, multi-tool knives, megaphones, ropes, shovels, sledgehammers, stretchers, spades, trowels, gardening gloves, watering cans, waste segregation bins, compost bins, and a steel box. These resources are designed to support emergency preparedness, waste management, and green school initiatives.
The event was attended by school representatives, local government officials, eco-club students, teachers, and project facilitators. Stakeholders expressed their gratitude for the resources, recognizing their importance in improving emergency preparedness and fostering a sustainable and resilient school environment.
“These resources will not only enhance our preparedness but also empower students, including those with disabilities, by providing a safer and greener school setting,” said Shanta Acharya, Principal of Sustamanasthiti Bal Kalyan Vidyalaya.
Local government officials and eco-club students also praised the initiative, emphasizing its role in creating disaster-resilient and environmentally sustainable schools.
“Collaboration between the community, schools, and organizations like UNICEF and NSET will ensure the creation of a safer and greener environment for our future generations,” said Seshkant Poudel, Education Officer of Lalitpur Metropolitan City.
The generous supporter of this initiative Aditi Banjara underscored the importance of supporting green and safe schools.
“Supporting these schools is an investment in the future of Nepal’s young generation,” Banjara remarked.
As the schools begin using the donated equipment, they will not only be better prepared for emergencies but will also contribute to promoting greener, more resilient school environments. This handover is a significant step forward in ensuring that Nepal’s schools can meet the challenges of climate change while providing safe, nurturing, and sustainable spaces for students.
