ACTIVITY REPORT: EARTHQUAKE SAFETY DAY NATIONAL MEETING
Honorable Chairman, Council of Ministers, Mr. Khilraj Regmi inaugurated the National Meeting of 16th Earthquake Safety Day 2014 amidst a large public gathering at Kathmandu Durbar Square, Kathmandu. Mr. Regmi in his remarks emphasized on the need of strict enforcement and implementation of Nepal National Building Code and further urged all the local bodies to work immediately towards the mandatory implementation of Building Code in their respective regions. He further stressed on the need of collaborative efforts from all the sectors of Nepal Government, Private sector, National and international organizations, and most importantly commitment from the people for disaster risk reduction.
Mr. Laxman Aryal, Chief and Executive Officer, Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Coordinator of ESD Management Sub-committee extended his welcome remarks and stated that the day is to generate massive public awareness and enhance their capacities towards disaster risk reduction. On the occasion, Ms. Hanna Singer, Country director of UNICEF Nepal mentioned that we need to ensure that we dramatically reduce risk by focusing on safer construction. She further stressed that the threat Nepal faces is so great that collaborative efforts of the government, civil society international actors, private sector and community is needed to reduce the risk of earthquake but more importantly the people of Nepal should be better informed in dealing with earthquakes.
Ms. Hanna Singer also highlighted the virtue and importance of Earthquake Safety Prevention and Precaution in Nepal.
The national meeting was concluded with the vote thanks and closing remarks from the Honorable Minister, Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (MOFALD), Mr. Bidhyadhar Mallik Chairperson of the national meet.
The program was conducted by Mr. Pradeep Koirala Under-Secretary Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of Nepal. Excellences from various Embassies in Nepal, senior officials from government, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army, Nepal Police, senior officials from Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Nepal Red Cross Society along with various other dignitaries were present on the national meet.
This year’s national mass meeting was locally hosted by Kathmandu Metropolitan City. The mass had got converged through Earthquake Awareness Rally that walked through the inner cities of Kathmandu. Mass meeting was with the participation of high level government officials, UN agencies, donor agencies, national/international NGOs, academic institutions and the public as well as community organization.
Nationwide Earthquake Safety Drill
On the occasion of 16th Earthquake Safety Day a nationwide earthquake safety drill was conducted at 2:24 PM. A special siren was aired from Radio Nepal and other FM stations across the country as a notification of an earthquake. The Drop Cover and Hold exercise was done for one minute to represent the time of 1934 Great Earthquake. Everyone present in the meeting starting from the Chief Guest, Honorable Chairman, Council of Ministers, Mr. Khilraj Regmi, other dignitaries on the dais including each and every individual in the audience performed this drill. After the drill everybody joined into a Human chain by holding hands as a symbol to express commitment towards earthquake safety.
“Drop Cover and Hold” has been accepted worldwide as the first step to be taken by every individual during an earthquake to be safer from physical injury and possible death. Nationwide exercise of this individual safety was initiated since the 10th Earthquake Safety Day, 2008.
