Disaster Resilient Communities in Nepal by 2050

NSET meets with Partner Radios in Bharatpur


A group of radio journalists from central and western Nepal gathered on February 14, 2014 at Bharatpur, Chitwan have focused on the importance of coordinated media efforts to raise public awareness, encourage community people for the needful risk reduction actions and help reduce the potential losses from the disaster occurrences. Nepal being a global hotspot for natural as well as human induced disasters, community level initiative is the one priority to work at and build local capacity to cope with adversities. Nepali radios scattered densely and extensively throughout the country remain instrumental in due course of making communities safer.

National Society for Earthquake Technology – Nepal (NSET) is conducting massive public awareness campaigns under USAID/OFDA funded PPP model program 3PERM. Regular weekly Radio Magazine and numbers of PSAs on promoting Earthquake Safety are being broadcasted from 28 radios all over the country. NSET is executing periodically regional and local level activities to orient partner media and help them enhance understanding on key issues so that radio programs could be better impacting. This is the second event of this year’s sequel held after program at Itahari in the east. Journalists from 8 of NSET partner radios from Dolakha, Lamjung, Kaski, Myagdi, Palpa, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi and Chitwan districts who are involved in DRR related radio programs contributed in a day long training workshop on Earthquake Safety and Disaster Risk Reduction. The program was locally hosted by Radio Triveni. Participants also visited radio station.

NSET Communication team members facilitated the orientation sessions. Also NSET team of Building Code Implementation in Nepal (BCIPN) program from the field office at Bharatpur joined in the program. NSET team next day visited radio station of Vijay FM at Gaindakot, Nawalparasi and interacted with Station Manager, Program Chief and Radio Staff on program ideas, relevance and response & feedback.
