Media talk on safe building practices in Nepal
As the major earthquake risk lies in building structures, media professionals have stressed on the very need to promote safe building practices and help mitigate potential threats. Media has key roles in raising public awareness and creating demand and also help in due course of opinion building and encourage government to come up with more strategic plan, policy and programs to execute. In a Media Interaction program held in Kathmandu today, journalists and DRR practitioners exchanged ideas and explored how both can jointly induce more impacting efforts.
“More focus in common practice seems to go in aesthetics rather than enhancing inherent strength of buildings, even commoner eyes can see investments poured on adding external attractions – and perhaps that is one area we need to intervene at” says Shree Ram Singh Basnet, Chief Editor of National News Agency.
Tirtha Koirala, News Chief of Kantipur Television points out the gaps of proper policy instruments and their effective implementation to keep all the stakeholders of building construction should abide by. “Understanding at the people level is very important and media also needs to have built up capacities to such issues to cover” he further stressed.
Tanka Panta, News Editor of Nepal Samacharpatra Daily finds stronger roles of localized and scattered print and radio media to involve together with big media houses. “DRR is one new but well identified news section most of the media nowadays have started to cover even in pre-disaster situations; and not waiting for disaster situations only” he highlighted.
To facilitate the discussion, two presentations were made by NSET professionals. Surya Narayan Shrestha, Deputy Executive Director in his presentation on “Safe Building Practices: status, challenges and opportunities” briefed on existing practices, policy status and strategic directions to achieve better safety. Bijay Krishna Upadhayay, Director presented on “Elements of Safe Building Construction” that gave practical & to-the-point techniques for safer construction practices.
Nearly 50 journalists from print, radio, TV and online media and DRR professionals had participated in a half day interactive workshop organized by NSET under the program NERMPII supported by USAID/OFDA at Yalamaya Kendra, Patandhoka.
