International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR Day) 2014 Observed
The International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) is observed on 13th of October annually worldwide after the resolution made by The UN General Assembly. The IDDR is a day to celebrate how people and communities are reducing their risk to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of DRR. It's also a day to encourage every citizen and government to take part in building more disaster resilient communities and nations. This year the focus of the IDDR Day was on older persons and disasters, including their needs and what they contribute to better planning and understanding of disaster risk in their communities.
Nepal also observed the IDDR 2014 with a series of events at national level as well as at local level like, national symposium, rally, media interactions, IEC materials development, documentary development, press meet, quiz contests, street drama, folks songs in TV, earthquake evacuation drill with vulnerability assessment and orientation at Pashupati Old Age Home
The celebration of IDDR 2014, was a joint initiative led by MoHA and coordinated by DPNet-Nepal in collaboration with various stakeholders, Gov Agencies, UN Agencies, DIPECHO partners, Red Cross Movement, Youth Networks, National Senior Citizen's Federation, AIN/TGDMCC and other national networks of DRR in Nepal.
National Society for Earthquake Technology Nepal-NSET has contributed in the following events in collaboration with others
> Presentation and Participate in the symposium
> Disseminations of PSAs through 28 local FMs
> Organizing talk show on national TV channel
> Conducting earthquake evacuation drill/simulation with orientation at Old Age Home at Pashupati in collaboration with NRCS & others.
NSET has organized orientation Program to the senior citizens in 10th October 2014 and Earthquake Evacuation Drill in 13th October 2014 at Pashupati Old age home . Dozens of elderly people at Social Welfare Centre Bridhhashram near the Pashupatinath Temple were participated in the Earthquake Preparedness response Orientation and Drill programs. Earthquake Emergency response Orientation and Evacuation Drill was successfully held by NSET in collaboration with Social Welfare Centre Bridhhashram Pashupati to mark the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR).In the Earthquake Evacuation Drill Monday afternoon (13th October 2014) at the old-age home Pashupati, among the 230, over 50 had participated in the demonstration. All the participants had partaken in the demonstration as if a real earthquake had hit the old-age home. Senior resource persons Bijay Krishna Upadhayay, Ganesh Kumar Jimee & Bhuwaneshowri Parajuli has taken a initiation to the all activities for IDDR day on behalf of NSET.
