One-day orientation and sharing workshop on Disaster Inventory/Information Management System in Nepal (Nepal DesInventar) in Kathmandu
One-day orientation and sharing workshop on Disaster Inventory/Information Management System in Nepal (Nepal DesInventar) was held on December 09, 2014 at Alpine Food Land, Battisputali Kathmandu. The workshop was jointly organized by Golden Gate International College and National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET). The program was supported by USAID/OFDA under Nepal Earthquake Risk Management Program (NERMP II) being implemented by National Society for Earthquake Technology- Nepal (NSET).
Since, NSET has been receiving a lot of requests from researchers and students for the disaster database that NSET has been maintaining historical records of disaster occurred in past from 1971 onwards using DesInventar methodology. NSET has realised need of wide range of dissemination of the works and provide training for the users, so that academia also benefit from this source. Thus the workshops were organised at the initial stage.
The major objectives of these two workshops were:
1. Sharing the status of disaster database management system of Nepal and Nepal DesInventar database with its usability in different level of planning and researches,
2. Provide hands-on training on DesInventar Methodology/Software system for data extraction and analysis.
Moreover, it was also aimed to make discussion on use and application potentiality of institutionalisation of DIMS for systematic capturing of natural disasters events from local level. The training was targeted for the Masters students of Environmental science as well Disaster Risk Management. Total 32 students from different educational institutions - Tri-Chandra College, Padma Kanya Campus, Amrit Science Campus and Golden Gate International College were participated.
The sharing and training of DesInventar Methodology/Database was felt extremely useful by all participants that it has huge resources that could be useful for different research purposes. Since the module was designed to cover focused on data extraction from the DesInventar database as available online (www.desinventar.net). Hands on practice on the system gave opportunity to participantsto be able to extract different levels of data as available in this achieves.
