MEDIA INTERACTION ON "KEY ISSUES OF EARTHQUAKE SAFETY"
As part of the 17th National Earthquake Safety Day (ESD) Celebration, an interaction program on "Key issues of earthquake Safety" was organized on 31 December 2014 at Entrance Café, Bakhundol, Lalitpur. The main objective of the program was to sensitize the media on the importance of earthquake risk reduction, preparedness and the role of media in disseminating the message to wider audience. The program further aimed to encourage the media to cover the ESD programs and spread the message extensively to the general public and thus be part of the national Earthquake Risk Reduction campaign. More than 35 different media personnel from various media (television, radio, print, online) participated in the interaction program.
Dr. Amod Mani Dixit, Executive Director of NSET briefed the media personnel on the Earthquake Risk Scenario and Status of Earthquake Risk Reduction Initiatives in Nepal. Dr. Dixit stressed on the major role of journalists in disseminating the message of earthquake safety to the general public. He encouraged the media personnel to dig out the news/stories in micro-level related to disaster risk management.
Speaking on the program Mr. Bishnu Bhakta Ranjit, Under Secretary of Department of Information, highlighted that it is high time now that we need to explore ways to enrich the role of media in Earthquake Risk Reduction in Nepal and encouraged the media personnel for the same.
On the Floor discussion Session, Mr. Khadga Sen Oli, Media, Advocacy & Outreach Manager at NSET shared the month long activities planned for the 17th National Earthquake Safety Day Celebrations. He requested the media personnel as well to be an integral part of the national campaign with their extensive media coverage on the ESD activities. Mr. Janak Babu Maharjan from the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction extended vote of thanks to the participants at the end of the program.
The program was jointly organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction, the Department of information & the NSET with support from the USAID/OFDA.
