Nepal focuses on building resilience through enhanced level of resources and technology
Nepal has stressed to focus on building resilience through enhanced level of resources and technology from the international community. Addressing the Third UN World Conference on DRR (WCDRR), Foreign Minister Mr. Mahendra B Pandey who is heading Nepali delegate affirmed commitments of Nepal Government to the principles, goals and priorities of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA). “This framework has provided us a valuable guidance and support in developing our disaster risk management approach. It has inspired us to develop a National Strategy for Disaster Risk Management. Based on this strategy, we have also drafted a new Disaster Management bill for the consideration of our parliament. It will provide us an important institutional framework to strengthen disaster risk reduction in the country” Minister Pandey mentioned in his statement.
“Nevertheless, we are seriously concerned that Nepal continues to remain one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to disasters such as earthquake, flooding, landslide, glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) etc., Mr. Pandey further added. It is also estimated that the human losses in the Kathmandu Valley alone, should there be a major seismic event, will be catastrophic.
Nepal has accorded due priority to ensure easy access to adequate risk information in view of its significance for the promotion of evidence-based decision making and resource allocation for risk reduction. The stocktaking work, currently underway in Nepal, is expected to support the Government’s initiative towards defining Nepal’s risk reduction priorities over the long term and also ensure that our work is closely aligned with post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction for the next decade and beyond.
The Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) was kicked off today in Sendai, Japan. It will be held from 14 to 18 March 2015 in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture.
