An awareness orientation on “Earthquake Risk Reduction and Preparedness Activities” was held on Thursday, 19th March, 2015 at the hall of Gorahi Cement Industry, Dang. The presentation was diffused to the staff of Gorahi Cement Industries Pvt Ltd . The entire session was locally coordinated by the human resource management team of Gorahi Cement Industries Pvt.Ltd with technical aid from National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) under promoting Public-Private Partnership for Earthquake Risk Management (3PERM) program supported by USAID/OFDA.
The entire presentation session was divided into two major components namely Earthquake Risk Reduction and Preparedness/Response Activities, covered by Mr. Surya Bhakta Sangachhen, Director, 3PERM, NSET and Mr. Pradip Thapa, Civil Engineer, 3PERM, NSET respectively. The participants were particularly informed to focus on earthquake preparedness in personal and community level rather than panicking by the risks posed by uncertain but inevitable earthquake hazard.
In addition to the current need of massive awareness raising on earthquake risks, the NSET presenters briefly highlighted the need of disaster recovery of businesses, industries and their stakeholders in the post-disaster stage. The emphasis was given to set an example by developing an effective and proactive Business Continuity Plan (BCP) so that the critical functions/services of the businesses would not be interrupted due to a disaster; natural or otherwise.
Besides professional interactions, the major intention of the program was to raise the “Earthquake Risk” awareness level of private sector businesses and improve their capability building programs to stay resilient. Towards the end of the session, Mr. Amar Subedi, Manager of human resources department, Gorahi Cement Industries Pvt. Ltd., made his closing remarks by thanking the employees and NSET team for sharing the knowledge on earthquake risks, preparedness activities, emergency response planning and BCP to mitigate the impact and loss.
