Temporary Shelter for the Earthquake Affected Families
In this aftermath of the Gorkha Earthquake 2015, there is a pressing need to construct shelters for immediate use before the forthcoming monsoon season. People may construct their homes in vulnerable ways without considering the future potential earthquakes. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to prepare designs for safe emergency shelters, inform people about such designs, and conduct trainings for proper construction of the houses.
Government of Nepal has brought out one prototype design for the temporary shelter. National Planning Commission (NPC) and Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) with technical assistance from NSET have prepared feasible designs of emergency shelters for rural areas using various locally available construction materials. There are two types of designs on shelters proposed. One of them is the immediate emergency shelter, which can be built by the affected people within a few hours using locally available material. The other is a temporary/transition shelter, Two Spam House; "Duinale Ghar", that can be built using locally available materials and technology with some improvement for structural safety against disasters.
Special Features of the Two Spam House "Duinale Ghar" are as follows;
» Duinale Ghar is designed to maximize the use of salvaged materials and minimize direct cash expenses. It will be constructed with masonry foundation up to plinth level, light walls on structural frames of bamboo and or timber and the roof will be covered by two bundles of Corrugated Iron Sheets.
» The house owner can build it with the help of some masons within 5 days
» Duinale Ghar is designed to suit the living style and social value system of the earthquake affected areas. The house will be able to resist heavy rain, high speed wind, and earthquake and will be durable for 4 years.
