PEER Regional Course Review Workshop held

As the National Society for Earthquake Technology – Nepal (NSET) embarked on implementing the Program for Enhancement of Emergency Response (PEER) Stage 4 (2014-2019), NSET gathered senior PEER instructors from the region to the Regional Course Review Workshop held in Kathmandu, Nepal on July 24-28, 2015. This workshop primarily aimed to present and arrive at a common understanding on the PEER courses by the partner organizations and promote linkage of the PEER courses. Senior PEER instructors presented the general issues and concerns from each of the PEER courses, namely, Medical First Responder (MFR), Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue (CSSR), Hospital Preparedness for Emergencies (HOPE) and Community Action for Disaster Response (CADRE).

During the five-day workshop, the senior PEER instructors also reviewed the present form of the courses and analyzed the suitability of these in the regional and national context. A side activity of the workshop was an initial brainstorming on Swift Water Rescue course development. During the closing program, Mr. Surya Narayan Shrestha, Deputy Executive Director of NSET, expressed NSET’s gratitude to the group of senior PEER instructors for their invaluable inputs during the workshop that will contribute to the overall improvement of PEER implementation. Mr. Shrestha also emphasized NSET’s role to strengthen program efficiency and institutionalization in each of the beneficiary countries. Workshop participants represented various PEER partner organizations from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Nepal.

In general, the workshop concluded with the apparent need to revise the courses taking into consideration new concepts, technologies and also take into account local equipment that can be used in during the conduct of trainings. The recently concluded course review workshop supports one of the program’s key activities, which is to continue implementing PEER training courses using improved curricula and plan with broader engagement of government, academic and private sector institutions in the future. PEER Stage 4 PEER is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development / Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA), and implemented by NSET in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan.
