The participants were imparted with theoretical knowledge as well as hands-on skills on earthquake resistant building construction. A full scale model of reinforced concrete structure erected by the participants while in due course of practical exercise with the view to enhance their learnings.
“We knew we were doing silly mistakes particularly in laps, hooks and spacings, now we know what is correct method to do” says Govinda Basnet, a participant who has already worked in number of buildings. Indra Kumar Nemwang, another participant highlights the importance of proper positioning of rebars. “The testing of casted slab at the end of training was something eye opening” he adds.
Suresh Karki, Technical Officer from Karyabinayak Municipality shared the municipality plan to further efforts on enhancing safer construction practices. Once we produce enough trained masons, we will manage the licensing system of masons so that only trained masons can build house, he stressed. Earlier, participant Keshram Maharjan had highlighted the need to develop licensing systems for regulating safer construction.
Karyabinayak Municipality and NSET jointly organized the training in Sep 24-28, 2015 as the part of ongoing Building Code Implementation Program in Municipalities of Nepal (BCIPN) funded by USAID/OFDA. Under BCIPN, NSET has been working with 30 municipalities in different parts of the country particularly focusing on building institutional and local capacity for the effective enforcement of Nepal’s National Building Code (NBC) in program municipalities. Being newly declared municipality, Karyabinayak Municipality has stepped in this course and this is the first mason training activity in the area. The plan next is to put forward the set of activities based on local need and compatibility.
