18th Earthquake Safety Day marked in Birtamod


18th Earthquake Safety Day marked in Birtamod on 2nd of Magh 2072 conducting various programs with the involvement of different stakeholders. Main Organizers of the programs include Birtamod Municipality, Jhapa's Chamber of Commerce, Jhapa Redcross Society, Journalist Association and Madbari Youth Forum of Birtamod city.

On the auspicious day, a rally walked through the main city of Birtamod starting from Athithi Sadan with banners showing the identification of the organizations and informative playcards, on the hands of participants, displaying messages regarding earthquake safety. Officials from different government offices, Municipality officials, Redcross, Jaycees club, Lions Club, Mason Groups, NGO's, Local people, Security forces and community organizations participated in the rally.

The rally then concluded in mass meeting. Executive officer of Birtamod Municipality Mr. Rabindra Prasad Wosti chaired the mass meeting. Engineer Kishor Timsina of NSET-Nepal was chief guest in the mass meeting. The mass meeting was also attended by high ranked officials from security forces, Representative from different Political parties, indigenous and marginalized groups along with the main organizing group.

In the welcome speech Mr. Raunak Bhamsal from Madwari Youth Forum, spoke on the importance of this program and showed commitment of further support of this program in coming years. Mr. Sajesh Siwakoti from one of the supporting organization Redcross Society,   highlighted the knowledge of earthquake safety techniques and requested the mass for earthquake preparedness through emergency bag and tent at their homes. He also requested the technical experts to express the earthquake related vulnerability and risk at various shaking levels.

Mr. Balram Karki, from Chamber of Commerce Jhapa, explained the current economic situation aftermath the April 25 Earthquake and inability of current government to address the current situation. Facing the fact of constantly experiencing earthquake in this place, he highlighted the importance of spreading earthquake safety knowledge to the general public and requested the public to raise above caste and politics to help the needy ones in this grueling situation working together in this nation building.

Mr. Ramlal Upreti spoke as a representative from all the political parties. He said it is impossible to build earthquake safe communities without providing knowledge to masons, house owners and all other technicians associated in construction practice around our locality.

Chief Guest Er. Kishor Timsina from National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) spoke on the cause of earthquake and interrelated that with the formation of Nepal, Thus showing inevitability of earthquake in our country. He explained the risk associated with Nepal and compared that with Japan who suffer similar Earthquake but goes unnoticed while thousands of people die in our country. Through Building safe houses, retrofitting of old ones and preparedness before Earthquake, He explained the strategies to reduce earthquake related risks in our country. He told about Building Code Implementation Program In Municipalities of Nepal (BCIPN) and the Memorandum of Understanding with Birtamod Municipality.

Chairperson of the program, Executive Officer of Birtamod Municipality thanked everyone for becoming a part of the program and making it very successful. He was grateful for all the help NSET has provided to Birtamod Municipality over the years and expects more support from NSET in coming years after signing in Memorandum of Understanding.

In the final presentation session Er. Kishor Timisina of NSET presented the scenario aftermath the disastrous Earthquake in April 25, Triggering factors behind such massive damage and lessons learned so that we don't face similar damage again.
