CSSR End Users Course in Nepalese Army


Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue (CSSR) skills are imparted to 24 responders of Nepalese Army. Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue (CSSR) End Users Course was conducted during April 17-21, 2016 at Nepalese Army, No. 1 Disaster Management Battalion, Sundarijal, Kathamandu by NSET in collaboration with Nepalese Army and with support of USAID/OFDA under the Program for Enhancement of Emergency Response (PEER) Stage 4.

CSSR End Users course provides the techniques and methods necessary for searching, locating, stabilising, and extricating victims trapped in collapsed structures, using the safest and most appropriate procedures for the search and rescuers.

All 24 participants were from Nepalese Army including officers (6), Junior Commissioned Officer (2) and other ranks (16). The team of instructors was composed of officers from Nepalese Army(4), Nepal Police(3), Armed Police Force(2), Nepal Red Cross Society(1) and NSET (1).

On 21 April 2016, the guests of the closing ceremony, Dr. Amod Mani Dixit, Executive Director, NSET and Chief of Party, PEER; Mr. Santosh Gyawali, AID Development Program Specialist, Disaster Risk Reduction/Preparedness, USAID/Nepal and Brigadier General Asmin Kumar Thapa, Director, Directorate of Disaster Management, Nepalese Army distributed the certificates to the participants and instructors.

All guests appreciated the role of PEER trained responders in saving lives during April 25 Gorkha Earthquake, and emphasished to continue such programs for further capacity enhancement of the responders in Nepal.  Bridadier General Asmin Kumar Thapa expresed gratitude to NSET and USAID for providing such important trainings to Nepalese Army responders. He also expressed his expectations for further colaborations with NSET for conducting such courses. Dr Amod Mani Dixit, thanking to all parthenrs, donor agency and the  nodel agency for supporting in implementation of this course, emphasised to make this process sustainable, institutionalized and cost effective. He expressed Nepal is an example in this region, the Nepalese instructors are pioneer and have trained the responders of the region. Mr. Gyawali, appreciated that the PEER is an example in this region for developing skilled responders. He also appreciated the devotion of Nepalese senior instructors for maintening the quality of the courses.

Lt. Col. Jagadish Khadka, Course Coordinator, presented a brief report of the course. He reported that all 24 participants successfully completed the course. Similarly, SSP Thule Rai, Course Monitor, appreciating the dedication of all instructors and inthusism of all participants, reported that the course was well conducted and was in the standard of USAID/OFDA.
