Malu VDC of Dolakha adds 30 trained masons -6th in the series
Local masons of Malu VDC, Dolakha are excited to learn the different techniques for earthquake resistant stone-mud and timber buildings. They collectively thanked NSET-BaliyoGhar team for organizing such training for the first time in their locality.
Stone masonry training concluded on 26th May, 2016 with 30 more masons being added in Dolakha regarding earthquake resilience buildings. It’s the Sixth Mason Training at Dolakha and First at Malu VDC.
Mr. Pokcha Sarki, one of the participants of Mason Training at Malu VDC, Dolakha shared, “We are thankful for organizing this program and teaching us different techniques of building the earthquake resistant houses. Similarly, we are really happy to learn under the supervision of instructors in a polite manner. This type of training was organized for the first time in our VDC. We assure you all that we will try our best to build earthquake resistant buildings in near future.”
The current construction practices of houses at Malu VDC found very poor compared to the Nepal National Building Code. The earthquake resistant components: bands at different level of construction, corner stiches, corner stone bonding, sufficient use of through stone, floor and wall connections, roof and wall connection were missing in most of the construction. This means that the community as well as construction workforce were unknown about the earthquake resistant parameters defined by NBC. This mason training is practically important to the masons groups since from the 8th day they will practically built the houses at their community.
There was an informal visit of Division Engineer Ekraj Adhikari and Engineer Mahalaxmi Shakya representatives of DUDBC, Dolakha Charikot, on fourth day of Mason Training Program.
The training course has been jointly organized by Department of Building Construction and Urban Development (DUDBC), Division Office, Dolakha and National Society for Earthquake Technology - Nepal (NSET) in collaboration with Malu VDC and with funding support from United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
