BaliyoGhar interacts with the journalists in program Districts
With the objective of sharing ideas and experiences on reconstruction and exchange understanding in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), the NSET/BaliyoGhar Communication team has conducted an interactive meeting with the local journalists of Dolakha, Nuwakot and Dhading. With funding support from USAID, NSET's Baliyo Ghar Program is being implemented in these three districts.
Members of Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) District Committee, media persons from local newspapers, radio stations and correspondents from national broadsheets in all three districts participated. Advocacy and Outreach Manager, Khadga Sen Oli and Communication Assistant, Ram Krishna Sharma and district coordinators of NSET/BaliyoGhar facilitated the discussions.
With the understanding that media has been very active stakeholder in ‪rebuilding Nepal‬‬‬ efforts, BaliyoGhar is building relationships with media outlets of project implementation districts for their enhanced engagements in promoting safer reconstruction.
5 local journalist were present at the interaction held at the Hall of Bidur Municipality, Nuwakot on July 25, 2016. They discussed the media’s role in promoting safer reconstruction. Journos from print and FM stations participated and shared their views and ideas.
Shree Ram Nepal, Vice-president of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Nuwakot highlighted the media efforts in the district in due course of reconstruction. Shreeram Adhikari, Station Manager of Radio Nuwakot stressed the need to raise public awareness through media. Participating journalists shared their ideas with reconstruction updates from Nuwakot.
Ramhari Neupane, News Chief of Radio Jalapa shared, “though we have been raising awareness in building back better, the policies of government in providing grants have created some problems in going to the people. . The models of houses are not user friendly, the quake affected population seems quite perplexed by it."
Khadga Sen Oli, Advocacy and Outreach Manager, made presentation highlighting the role of media in overall Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and particularly in Post-Earthquake Reconstruction, while Aayush Baskota, Nuwakot Coordinator of BaliyoGhar program, focused on the planned activities and achievements of BaliyoGhar in the district.
Nuwakot is one of the most earthquake-affected districts with more than 65,000 houses reportedly damaged, hence organized efforts are required for safer and better reconstruction.
According to a Post Disaster Needs Assessment report, 83,000 houses were damaged in Dhading and now 70,000 local house-owners are on the beneficiary list to receive government grants.
Soon after the presentation of Advocacy and Outreach Manager Khadga Sen Oli, journalists shared their experiences and ideas and also queries on global experiences and practices regarding earthquake reconstruction. Navaraj Chhatkuli, President of FNJ, Dhading briefly shared media efforts in speeding up reconstruction efforts in the district. Rajaram Sharma, Station Manager of Radio Dhading shared experiences of working in post-earthquake emergency situation to serve people with right information and also highlighted the need to enhance media engagement in reconstruction phase as well.
Pramod Khatiwada, Dhading Coordinator of the BaliyoGhar program, highlighted the planned activities and achievements of program in the district.
Citing the experiences of locals, Sahadev Thapa, reporter of Avenues Television said 'though the pilot program to distribute government grants started from Dolakha, locals seem to be upset since they have not received their first tranches. And also the amount is so little that quake affected people are reluctant to start constructing their houses."
Khadga Sen Oli, Advocacy and Outreach Manager, in his presentation had emphasized the role of media in propagating positive messages on best practices. Achyut Poudel, Dolakha Coordinator of the BaliyoGhar program, highlighted the major activities planned and achievements of the program in the district.
