Regional Discourse on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology accomplished in Pakistan
“Workshop on Recent Advancements in Earthquake Engineering and Seismology in South Asian Countries” has been accomplished focusing on need to collaborate for more organized and coordinated research efforts at regional level to tackle common threats in the region. Department of Earthquake Engineering, NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi, Pakistan had organized the workshop during 9-10, August 2016 in collaboration with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Pakistan and with funding support from Abdus Salam Internal Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICPT) Trieste, Italy. Participants were from USA, Italy, Pakistan, Nepal, Tajikistan, Srilanka, Bangladesh and Bhutan.
Prof. Sarosh Hashmat Lodi from NED University, Pakistan in his welcome speech highlighted the purpose and objectives of the event. Addressing the Inaugural Session, Prof. Abdelkrim Aoudia from ICPT, Italy discussed on education, training and networking for a sustainable research in earthquake prone regions. Mr. Ahmed Kamal from NDMA, Pakistan talked on Regional Cooperation in Earthquake Risk Assessment. Prof. Muhammad Afzal Haque, Vice Chancellor of NED University, Pakistan concluded the session with his remarks on program activities scheduled.
Keynote speaker, Prof. Roger Bilham from University of Colorado, USA presented on Great Himalayan Earthquake Cannibalize Ancestral Failures: Lessons from the Gorkha Earthquake. In this presentation, he mostly talked about seismic activities in around Indo-Tibetan plates, Arabic plates etc. Also, outcome of his long researches in this regard was debriefed. In the following session, experts from Pakistan and representatives from UNDP presented on Seismic Risk Assessment of Pakistan and DRR Policies-Benefits to the region.
In a session dedicated to April 2015 Gorkha Earthquake, Dr. Amod Mani Dixit from NSET, Nepal presented on Twenty-three years of ERM efforts in Nepal tested against the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake. Mr. Kuber Bogati, Structural Engineer from NSET discussed on Fragility Functions of Nepalese Buildings: A Comparison between Analytical Proposition and Actual Damage Recorded during the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake.
In the session for Country Presentations, Prof. Raquib Ahsan from Bangladesh University presented on Developments in Vulnerability Assessment Practices in Bangladesh after the Rana Plaza incident. Similarly, Comprehensive Earthquake Preparedness in Bangladesh-Challenges and way forward was talked by Mr. Nurul Alam from DRMI, Tajikistan. Dr. Amit Kumar from DRMI, Tajikistan presented on Earthquake Safety in South and Central Asia - Public Private Partnership towards Safer Development. Dr. Kushan Wijesundara from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka presented his scientific research on Numerical Simulation for prediction of peak ground acceleration at bedrock in Sri Lanka while Prof. Ranjith Dissanayake from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka talked on Seismic Retrofitting of Structures. Mr. Phuntsho Pelgay, from Department of Geology and Mines, Bhutan presented on Seismicity of Bhutan Himalaya and current initiatives to mitigate the risk.In a panel discussion, Prof. Sarosh presented a concept for creating mutual working environment in common scientific problems in the south Asian region i.e. SHAKE [ SoutH Asian NetworK for Earthquake Studies]. Prof. Abdelkrim shared his best experiences of such networks in the world that he is associated with. And he stressed about seeking support (not grant) from internal and external bodies of the network. Dr. Amod Mani Dixit shared his experiences too in this regard. The idea of SHAKE is to work hand in hand in common issues of the region mainly on sharing knowledge and experiences, sharing resources & facilities with each other and ensuring the involvement of young scientific minds to help make the living worthy and easy.
Panel discussion finalized the team members of SHAKE as followings:(First Batch)
1) Dr. Mukesh Kumar (NED University, Pakistan) – Coordinator (SHAKE)
2) Mr. Kuber Bogati, (NSET-Nepal) - Country representative
3) Dr. Kusha Wijesundara (University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka), - Country representative
4) Mr. Phuntsho Pelgay(Department of Geology and Mines, Bhutan) - Country representative
5) Country representative, Bangladesh - To be nominated
6) Country representative from other south Asian countries, - To be nominated
Senior professionals and practitioners are to serve as Leaders & Advisors for the team SHAKE.
