BaliyoGhar: Accelerating Activities amid the Monsoon and Festivals
With the speedy distribution of the first tranches of government grants for earthquake affected people, the reconstruction campaign seems to be going smoothly. Some houses have been built already and some are under construction but there are many houses yet to build. As the monsoon is about to end and the great festivals are in the yard of the Nepalese, it's expected that many of the houses flattened by the April 25-Gorkha Earthquake are likely to be reconstructed after the festivals.
With the monsoon ending and the major festivals like Dashain and Tihar upon us, the BaliyoGhar Program Team is busy conducting mason trainings in Dolakha, Nuwakot and Dhading districts. Mason trainings enhance the skill of masons in earthquake resistant building construction. To date 40 mason trainings have been held in the program implemented districts with 5 mason trainings finished in the first half of September alone; two each in Dolakha and Dhading districts, and one in Nuwakot.
Dolakha’s as 17th training was held at Alampu Village Development Committee (VDC)-5, Toparadada and upskilled a remarkable eight female masons. The program was organized amid the challenges of landslide which cut off road access and required materials to be transported from Singhati by porters. Dolakha’s 18th mason training was held at Japhe VDC, with 32 local masons from Japhe, Jhule and Malu VDCs trained.
Dhading district’s 13th and 14th mason trainings have been completed at Nalang-5, Jyamiswora and Dhuwakot VDC-7 respectively. 32 masons enhanced their technical abilities in Nalang, and 34 masons were trained in Dhuwakot. Dhurba Prasad Aryal, a participant at Nalang said, “I had been working in the field of building construction for last couple of years but my technical knowledge was limited. This training has helped me understand the methods of constructing earthquake resistant rural buildings.”
Likewise, Nuwakot hosted its 8th mason training at Thanapati VDC. It was the first mason training held in Thanapati. 34 local masons were trained at Jana Gyan School, bringing the total number of trained masons in the district to 190.
An On the Job Training Refresher Course for Master Instructors has also been conducted at NSET head office. 19 participants, four from other international and local NGOs, have been trained to conduct On the Job Training in districts and VDCs. Interested locals will participate the OJT training to gain technical knowledge on earthquake resistant construction in their communities.
The USAID funded BaliyoGhar program is an initiative to support the Government of Nepal’s model of owner-driven housing reconstruction following the Gorkha Earthquake. NSET is providing technical assistance to 33 VDCs and 3 Municipality in three districts for safe reconstruction through the BaliyoGhar Program.
