Disaster Resilient Communities in Nepal by 2050

Training Workshop on Earthquake Engineering starts in Kathmandu

A scientific discourse kicks-off today in Kathmandu with the view to enhance knowledge on Earthquake Hazard in Nepal.

NSET and USGS are jointly organizing “Training Workshop on Earthquake Engineering” in collaboration with California Institute of Technology (CalTech) and Earthquake Safety Solutions (ESS), Nepal during September 19-22, 2016 at Hindole Hall, NSET. The overall aim of the training is to enhance knowledge on Earthquake Hazard in Nepal national capacity in earthquake risk reduction in Nepal.

The program specifically seeks to account the effect of soil structure interaction in the design of building; determine the dynamic slope stability factor of safety (FOS) and displacement prediction of slope; understand the earthquake response of infilled framed structure; understand the basics of structural instrumentation and use the data for analysis of structure; use simplified modelling approach for infilled framed structure; and also to understand the analysis process and visualization of the intensity data.

The international team of course instructors/facilitators comprises: Dr. Susan Hough, Seismologist, United States Geological Societies (USGS); Prof. Dr. Domniki Asimaki, Professor, California Institute of Technology; Dr. Amod Mani Dixit, Executive Director, NSET, Dr. H. Benjamin Mason, Assistant Professor, Oregan State University; Dr. Andreas Stavidris, Assistant Professor, University at Baffalo and Mr. Gopi Bashyal, Geographer/GIS Expert, NSET.

Participating 30 professionals and practitioners are from the field of earthquake engineering, seismology and geotechnical earthquake engineering representing the government, professional societies and the private sector.

Earlier, NSET and USGS had jointly organized a Training Workshop on “PSHA, Seismic Microzonation and Monitoring” during April 25-27, 2016 for professionals working in the field of earthquake engineering and seismic monitoring. This activity is the logical continuation of the same.

National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) has been collaborating with different international institutes and organizations to enhance the scientific knowledge on seismic hazard in Nepal and the exploring possible appropriate risk reduction measures.
