Comprehensive School Safety Program (CSS) activities held in the remote district of Humla
District Orientation Workshop on Comprehensive School Safety (CSS) held in Humla District
Government of Nepal, Ministry of Education, and Department of Education (DOE) in association with UNICEF Nepal and NSET organized One-Day District Orientation Workshop to the district level educational stakeholders on Nov 17, 2016 in Simikot, Humla. The main objective of the Workshop was to orient the district level stakeholders on CSS program, its objectives and define role and responsibilities of the respective stakeholders for the implementation of CSS in Humla District.
Total 43 participants (38 male and 5 female) representing MOE, DOE, District Education Office (DEO), District Administration Office (DAO), District Development Committee (DDC), local NGOs, media, Teachers, Resource person (RPs) participated in and contributed to the workshop. The workshop was facilitated by NSET professionals; Executive Director Dr. Amod Mani Dixit and Program Director Mr. Surya Prasad Acharya.
The program was organized under the program “Enhancing Children’s Safety and community resilience through integration of Comprehensive School Safety Program (CSS)” implemented by NSET with the financial support from UNICEF Nepal.
Series of One-Day Refresher Training conducted for the school teachers with the objective to ensure the skills and knowledge provided in the earlier phase through the capacity building program are retained and updated. Total 3 Resource Center level Refresher Trainings were conducted in Resource Centers at Simikot, Chaungfaya and Lali. Altogether 96 teachers (82 male teachers and 14 female teachers) from 39 schools participated in the programs.
one day refresher training on CSS and DRR/CCA was organized in Bhimsen Lower Secondary School, for the teachers of Simikot Resource Center on 24 November 2016. Mr. Madan Kumar Thapa, DEO, Mr. Mum Lal Acharya, RP, Simikot and Mr. Sushil Pandit, Program Officer, NSET were the trainers of the program. The training was provided to 26 teachers (20 male teachers and 6 female teachers) from 11 schools in Simikot. The training was provided with the main objective to refresh the training provided in the previous program phase on disaster, Disaster Risk Management, Risk Reduction, preparedness and response, CSS and Education in Emergency (EiE), local hazard and school preparedness plan.
Four school level Orientations on CSS and DRR/CCA conducted to 700 students and 40 teachers from Mansarovar Higher Secondary School, Bhimsen Lower Secondary School, KalaSiltha Primary School and Himlayan Boarding School in Simikot. The students and teachers were oriented on multi hazards, preparedness and response (before, during and after) along drill exercises on fire and earthquake response. Videos on disasters and preparedness were shown to the students for the observation and practical experience.Through the orientation workshop the students were able to identify possible hazards in their locality and basic preparedness activities before, during and after any disasters. It has been expected that the teachers are enabled to conduct DRR sessions in the schools and prepare the school and students to better response and prepare for potential hazards in their locality.
One day refresher training on CSS and DRR/CCA to teachers of Chaungfaya Resource Center was conducted on 27 November 2016 in Kailash Secondary School, Dandafaya. 22 teachers (18 male teachers and 4 female teachers) from 12 schools from Dandafaya were trained by Mr. Ganga Prasad Bhatta, RP and Mr. Sushil Pandit, Program Officer, NSET. The major objective of the refresher training was to refresh the knowledge and skills of the school teachers on CSS, DRR/CCA, local hazards, preparedness school action plan etc.
The program also aims to disseminate information on DRR/CCA through various publications. In Humla, flex prints with messages on DRR/CCA, response and preparedness distributed to 6 schools: Mansarovar Higher Secondary School, Bhimsen Lower Secondary School, KalaSiltha Primary School, Himlayan Boarding School, Bal Mandir Secondary School and Kailash Boarding School.
