BaliyoGhar completed 3rd quarter of its 2nd Year Implementation
The road to reconstruction and recovery has been a long and tedious one due to the delay in executing post-quake works though some positive scenes have been portrayed in the earthquake hit areas. Two years more have been passed since the devastating earthquake, which rattled the country with thousands of deaths and caused damages to physical structures worth millions of rupees.
Activities in regard to reconstruction are being speeded up amid the monsoon. According to National Reconstruction Authority (NRA), till 15th July 2017, 44,916 flattened houses have been reconstructed and 1, 12,576 houses are under construction in quake hit districts. 'Around 35% houses are under construction but not all have been reported to system,' NRA says. Apart from housing reconstruction, reconstruction of public buildings like, health centers, schools, government buildings, archeological heritages and community shelters is also accelerated. 2100 educational institutions have been rebuilt and 2000 more are under construction.
Being a part of reconstruction process, NSET too is speeding up its activities to support the government efforts in reconstruction through USAID supported BaliyoGhar Program. BaliyoGhar team is busy in conducting various activities like; Mason Training for existing masons, Training of Trainers (TOT), Community Orientations, Mobile Clinic and On the Job Training to develop new masons in Dolakha, Nuwakot, Dhading and Kathmandu to ensure safer reconstruction and promote earthquake safety and preparedness.
BaliyoGhar Program is providing technical blanket assistance at Kageshwori Manohara Municipality of Kathmandu, 13 VDCs and a municipality in Dolakha, 9 VDCs of Nuwakot and 11 VDCs and a municipality in Dhading district.
BaliyoGhar program has completed its 3rd quarter of 2nd year implementation adding more and more trained masons through mason trainings and On the Job Trainings, providing technical assistance via door to door campaign and organizing community orientations in the 4 districts.
238 more Community Orientations and 1766 Mobile Clinics organized
In promoting safer reconstruction and disseminating the information regarding earthquake safety, preparedness and the importance of earthquake resistant construction works, awareness raising program has become one of the important tool in the quake hit communities. The awareness raising program is carried out through orientation program, door to door visit, information hub and help desks etc. BaliyoGhar has accomplished 238 community orientations in Kathmandu, Dolakha, Dhading and Nuwakot in 3rd quarter of 2nd year implementation (April, May, June 2017) benefiting 2766 males and 1986 females.
Likewise, 1766 earthquake affected people got mobile clinic service of BaliyoGhar where, Mobile Team comprising Engineer, Social Mobilizer and a Construction Technician provide technical assistance to the members of under-constructed house.
619 more Trained Masons added in program areas
To enhance the knowledge and skills of existing masons, 21 mason trainings have been accomplished in the 3rd quarter by which 619 more masons have been added in the BaliyoGhar implemented areas. Mason training has been one of the major activities to ensure safer reconstruction. One of the participant of mason training accomplished on June 12 at Katakuti Dolakha, Mr. Nara Bahadur Shrestha shared,” I have been involved in building construction since 3-4 years but I didn’t have knowledge of such technology which makes our houses strong to resist earthquakes. I had been constructing houses in traditional way. Now, I learned much about the technology of masonry construction. I am so glad to have such training. Thanks to NSET/BaliyoGhar for providing me such a great opportunity.”
Likewise, with the objectives to build common understanding on basic information about societal aspects for community development and social mobilization and making the participants familiarized about earthquake safety, preparedness and technical aspects of earthquake safe housing construction, social mobilizers trainings are being organized in BaliyoGhar implemented districts. In the 3rd quarter of Year-2, only one social mobilizers (SM) training of trainers (TOT) is accomplished at Bidur, Nuwakot with 28 participants.
