Journalists from Baliyo Ghar partner media discoursed on reconstruction issues and priorities
"Baliyo Ghar" Program has conducted Media Workshop on "Promoting Safer Reconstruction" in Kathmandu during November 2-3, 2017. The workshop intended to discourse on current reconstruction issues and priorities. The main purpose had been to build better understanding among the media partners on national campaign of "Build Back Safer", promote safer reconstruction and enhance earthquake preparedness through media activities. Total 30 journalists participated, representing one television program production team from Kathmandu; and 13 FM Radio Stations from earthquake most-hit districts of Dolakha, Nuwakot and Dhading and Kathmandu valley. Also, communication focal persons of Baliyo Ghar district teams and NSET and also HRRP staff participated in the process.
Addressing the inaugural session, Mr. Yam Lal Bhusal, Spokesperson and Joint Secretary of National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) briefed on progress and current status of reconstruction in Nepal in various sectors and highlighted the roles of media to play in communicating correctly the information and knowledge to communities. Mr. Bhusal also shared the NRA plan to focus more on Housing Reconstruction to accomplish this within next 8 months before next monsoon commences.
Dr. Amod Mani Dixit, Executive Director of NSET shared the experiences on post-earthquake reconstruction from around the world. Dr. Dixit remarked that the path Nepal has paved in due course of post-earthquake reconstruction is much satisfying though progressing bit slow.
The participants went through various thematic sessions and group works to explore various facets of reconstruction process in Nepal and also to streamline ideas how media efforts would better serve to the cause. DRR Professionals and Communication Experts facilitated the thematic sessions.
To support ground setting for the Workshop exercises, separate Keynote Presentations done from National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) and Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA). NRA Spokesperson Mr. Yam Lal Bhusal presented on Reconstruction in Nepal: Current Status and Strategic Directions. From MoHA, Mr. Shankar Hari Acharya, Chief of National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) talked on Communicating in Disaster Crises: Systems and Practices in Nepal.
Mr. Surya Narayan Shrestha from NSET discussed on comparisons of Post-Earthquake Reconstruction process accomplished in other countries and Nepal's progress. Senior Media Expert Mr. Shreeram Singh Basnet shared on Importance of Communication & Role of Media in Reconstruction process. Dr. Ramesh Guragain from NSET discussed extensively on "What and How the Reconstruction is going in in Nepal". Mr. Ranjan Dhungel from Baliyo Ghar discussed on Housing Construction Practices in Nepal and Earthquake Resistant Building Construction Methods.
Participants intensively engaged in Group Discussions on following themes: A) Bringing the issues of vulnerable population and linking to OJT; and B) Baliyo Ghar Radio/TV Program Planning Workshop Proceeding will be prepared and shared shortly.
Baliyo Ghar is the five-year project implemented by the National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET), is a key part of USAID/Nepal’s reconstruction portfolio. Designed to help homeowners and communities rebuild in a way that increases their resilience to future disasters, Baliyo Ghar is closely aligned with the Government of Nepal (GON) owner-driven housing reconstruction project which empowers and supports homeowners, allowing them to build back safer.
