Disaster Mitigation Award 2009
November 4, 2009: Mr. Amod Mani Dixit, Executive Director of National Society for Earthquake Technology –Nepal (NSET) has been honored with prestigious Disaster Mitigation Award – 2009 by National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), an undertaking of Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. NIDM mentioned officially that Mr. Dixit has been selected for this award in view of his outstanding contributions for education, training and awareness for earthquake risk mitigation in South Asian Region. Mr. Dixit got honored with this award in a very august presence of distinguished personalities including Gen. N.C.Vij, Vice-chairman of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), India; Ms. Margareta Wahlstorm, UN Assistant Secretary General and Special representative for Disaster Risk Reduction and Mr. G.K. Pillai, Union Home Secretary; in a very auspicious occasion of inaugural session of Second India Disaster Management Congress, on Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The congress has been scheduled to continue during 4-6 Nov, 2009.
NIDM had instituted Disaster Mitigation Award, which was given to two distinguished persons during the First India Disaster Management Congress in November 2006, Dr. A.S. Arya, Professor Emeritus, IIT Roorkee from India and Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Noble Laureate and the Founder of Grameen Bank from Bangladesh for their outstanding contributions for reducing disaster risk in South Asia.
Mr. Amod Mani Dixit has been actively engaged in natural hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction since 1978. He is the founding General Secretary of National Society for Earthquake Technology - Nepal (NSET), an institution dedicated for earthquake safety in Nepal and in the region. NSET was established in 1993 with the vision to make “Earthquake Safe Communities in Nepal by 2020”, and has been extensively contributing on various facets of disaster risk reduction and specifically on earthquake safety. A broad spectrum of NSET activities aligns perfectly with its institutional vision. Mr. Dixit had been actively engaged in Post-earthquake studies by international team in Gujarat earthquake 2001. NSET then involved massively in the processes of technology transfer, knowledge management and earthquake-resistant reconstruction works in Gujarat. Mr. Dixit has led the numerous projects on earthquake mitigation, preparedness, response and reconstruction in Asian countries like Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Indonesia, Tazakistan, Iran, Japan and others.
What Mr. Dixit is well known for in this region is his approach to work on DRR shifting its some of basic paradigms from reactive to pro-active, technically injected to people owned (or led) and also being stick to & attempt for the true facts and situations how hard it would be. He has been actively involved in founding and promoting different institutional mechanisms and ideas in the region like Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network (ADRRN), Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM), Case Station-Field Campus (CASiFiCA), Disaster Reduction Hyperbase (DRH).
This award to a Nepali professional has encouraged to furthering disaster risk reduction initiatives within Nepal and also in the region.
