15th Earthquake Safety Day Celebrated
Nepal marked its 15th Annual National Earthquake Safety Day (ESD) this January 15, 2013. The National Earthquake Safety Day is a day to raise awareness and share information and experiences on disaster/earthquake risk reduction. The ESD is actually the culmination of earthquake risk management works implemented in the country in the preceding 12 months, and thus allows taking stock of the achievements and shortcomings.
The country celebrated the Earthquake Safety Day this year with the main slogan:
"Earthquakes are unpredictable and can be deadly
Let's work together to save lives and property"
Raising awareness among people and authorities on impending earthquake risk and on ways to mitigating the risks is a key for reducing the risk. Realizing this, Nepal has been observing every year on 2nd day of the Nepali Month Magh (that falls on 15th or 16th of January) as the Earthquake Safety Day with several earthquake awareness-raising activities since past 14 years. The day is observed in commemoration of the devastation caused by 1934 Nepal- Bihar earthquake that occurred on January 15, 1934.
Government of Nepal had declared Earthquake Safety Day in 1999 and established an Earthquake Safety Day National Committee for observing the Day annually throughout the country. ESD National Committee led by Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) is accompanied with representatives from various government and nongovernment agencies related to Disaster Risk Reduction, Emergency Response and Critical Facility Management. Two sub-committees are formed separately chaired by DUDBC for publicity campaigns and host Municipality for event management. The National Society for Earthquake Technology- Nepal (NSET) serves as the member secretary of the Earthquake Safety Day National Committee (ESDNC).
ESD is not only a single day event but series of weeklong activities that may extend even for more days. It has been realized that the celebration of such a day with several activities has contributed much to revisit year-long efforts, renew national commitments toward earthquake safety promotion and help raise public awareness. The year 2013 is the seventy ninth year of the Great Bihar- Nepal Earthquake (Magh 2 1990 BS, 1934AD), one of the devastating earthquakes in the living memory. In the earthquake more than eight thousand people lost their lives with massive destruction of property.
As in the previous years, various events were conducted this year also to observe ESD throughout Nepal as collaborative effort of various stakeholders under the leadership of Government of Nepal.
Bhaktapur Sub Metro-Politian City hosted national programs this year.
