NSET and PES (Rescue112) organized PEER training events in Pakistan
The National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) in collaboration with Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) organized Training for Instructors (TFI), Medical First Responder Instructors’ Workshop (MFRIW) and Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue Instructors’ Workshop (CSSRIW), under the Program for Enhancement of Emergency Response (PEER), at Emergency Services Academy in Lahore, Pakistan. The National Disaster Management Authority – Government of Pakistan provides the overall guidance and strategic direction for the implementation of PEER in Pakistan.
The TFI course was conducted on January 3-7, 2014, whereas MFRIW on January 10-14, 2014 and CSSRIW on January 19-25, 2014. These instructor development courses aim to develop additional qualified instructors in MFR and CSSR from Punjab Emergency Service. The recently concluded courses were supported by Punjab Emergency Service and NSET through PEER Partial Funding Assistance Program. PEER is funded by the United States Agency for International Development / Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) since 1998. TFI course had 27 participants; MFR and CSSRIW had each 24 participants who successfully completed the course after undergoing series of rigorous theoretical and practical evaluation. The course participants came from different districts of Punjab, holding key roles and responsibilities in emergency response, and are poised to deliver MFR-CSSR and other similar skills-based trainings in PES for further developing skilled emergency responders in the country.
Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) is the largest emergency humanitarian service organization in Pakistan with infrastructure in all 36 districts of Punjab and is providing technical assistance to other provinces of the country. It has highly trained teams and equipped for Ambulance, Rescue & Fire services, including Community Emergency Response Teams. Pakistan and PES (Rescue 1122) have been inducted to PEER since 2007, after the Kashmir earthquake in 2005.
