Radio Journalists Oriented on Earthquake safety
Radio Journalist from Midwest and Farwest regions got oriented on Earthquake Safety in a program facilitated by National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) at Krishnasar FM, Nepalgunj, Banke. Different aspects of disaster risk reduction were discussed in the event participated by radio journalists from 7 different radio stations in the west.
‘Radio journalists should follow certain guidelines so that the disaster risk reduction issues are properly covered without creating panic in the communities, stresses Mr. Khadga Sen Oli, Advocacy and Outreach Manager at NSET.
Mr.Tula Raj Adhikari, Station Manager, Radio Krishnasar, mentioned that such kind of Orientation program helps in building the capacity of the local journalist and it should be conducted frequently at the local level so that the journalists themselves gets acquainted with the DRR issues on the first hand. Chiranjivi Giri, Program Presenter of Radio Bulbule, Surkhet indicated that as a part of motivating the listeners of the DRR program, some provisions has to be made so that the active listeners are awarded. Mukta Singh, Program Presenter from Dinesh FM, Dhangadhi, Kailali agreed with him and mentions that by this listeners can be increased. Lack of proper understanding on DRR has always created problems for local reporters while covering DRR issues says Madhav Chaudhary, Presenter from Radio Madhypaschim, Dang, expressing his happiness to be a part of this orientation program. Jagadish Rokaya, Progra, Presenter from Saipal FM ,Bajhang mentioned that the program "Bhukampiya SurakSha” is gaining popularity and even local government is convinced on their role on DRR in the recent time which is the outcome of the Radio Program he says. Ashoknath Giri, chairperson of Radio Nepali Awaj ,Kalikot agreed to that and showed his keen eagerness on working more towards generating public awareness.
During the program, the participants enthusiastically interacted on various issues of DRR, role of media, especially radio in propagating the message of DRR and earthquake safety to a wider audience in an effective manner.
This is an attempt as a part of NSET endeavors to enhance media engagement for building community resiliency.
NSET communication team also visited and interacted with the partner radio stations of western Nepal such as Dinesh FM, Dhangadhi, Kailali, Mahakali FM, Kanchanpur, Radio Madhyapaschim, Dang and Butwal FM, Butwal.
