Disaster Resilient Communities in Nepal by 2050

NSET visits and meets with Partner Kalinchowk FM, Dolakha


With the view to enhance quality and local adaptability of partner radio program, NSET facilitated an orientatationto program and news team of Kalinchowk FM, Dolakha. NSET is conducting massive public awareness campaign activities through radios at community level in partnership with 28 radios all over the country under USAID/OFDA funded program 3PERM.

The management team and staff of Kalinchok FM got oriented on oriented on earthquake risk reduction and disaster preparedness issues and also the role of media on the same. The participants also explored ways to serve people at the localities know risks and take initiatives for proper actions. “We are benefited from the program, institutionally and even at personal level” – says Mr. Dipak Basnet, President of the radio. Mr. Sher Bahadur Bhujel, News Coordinator highlighted on radio efforts to cover not only earthquake issues but all types of hazards and risks Charikot and whole the Dolakha and localities nearby were to hit by. Radio journalists Ms Mandina Subedi, Ms. Nirashi Thami, Mr. Dashrath Giri, Ms. Usha Tamang and Ms. Gayatri Acharya expressed the feeling like the content and ideas shared are worth. Mr. Khadga Sen Oli from NSET facilitated the session.

Radio next organized a meeting with DRR key stakeholders at the district. Chief District Officer Mr. Prahlad Pokharel shared the experience of last monsoon’s incident that Tamakoshi river got blocked for 8-10 minutes due to sudden debris flow in one watercourse. "The importance of minute-and-minute time in disaster situations specially to properly communicate facts and take necessary action is utmost” stresses Mr. Pokharel. Mr. Jagadish Aryal, Acting LDO of Dolakha DDC, Mr. Tika Narayan Pradhan, Secretary of NRCS Dolakha and Mr. Uddav Pokharel, President of Federation of Nepali Journalists Dolakha also shared on past disasters from the district and also focused on need to focus more on risk reduction at local level. NSET professional Mr. Khadga Sen Oli briefed in his presentation the facts and figures of losses in the district in past disasters. DesInventar reports 388 deaths during past 41 years and 132 are caused by landslides. Landslide found the recurrent and high scoring threat. NSET team next day interacted also with Municipal Engineer Mr. Suresh Raut to explore ways to work together for upgrading safety the Bhimeshwor Municipality.

Also Radio Status Survey conducted to draw information and ideas on radio in terms of institutional and technical attributes and also its program mix as well their listenership. President Mr. Dipak Basnet and team also made tour of station facilities to visiting Khadga Sen Oli and Chandan Dhoj Rana Magar from NSET Communication team.
