PEER increases MFR and CSSR instructors in Nepal
The National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) in collaboration with Armed Police Force (APF) organized Medical First Responder Instructors’ Workshop (MFRIW) and Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue Instructors’ Workshop (CSSRIW), under the Program for Enhancement of Emergency Response (PEER), at Disaster Management Training Center (DMTC), Kurintar, Nepal.
The MFRIW course was conducted on March 20-24, 2014 and CSSRIW on March 28 - April 03, 2014. These instructor development courses aim to develop additional qualified instructors in MFR and CSSR from various partner organizations such as APF, Nepal Police (NP), NSET and Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS). The recently concluded courses were supported by APF and NSET through PEER Partial Funding Assistance Program.
MFRIW course had 21 participants and CSSRIW had 22 participants who successfully completed the course after undergoing series of rigorous theoretical and practical evaluations. The course participants represented various PEER partner organizations in Nepal, holding key roles and responsibilities in emergency response, and are poised to deliver MFR-CSSR and other similar skills-based trainings in their respective organization for further developing skilled emergency responders in the country. Until date, there are a total of qualified 113 MFR instructors and 87 CSSR instructors in Nepal.
The series of PEER training events in APF DMTC culminated with a closing ceremony and an exhibit of MFR-CSSR training equipment on April 3, 2013, at APF DMTC grounds. The program was graced by APF Additional Inspector General Durja Kumar Rai, Chief Guest – Chief of APF Human Resource Development Department; NP Deputy Inspector General Bigyan Raj Sharma; Mr. Janka Nath Dhakal – Chief of National Emergency Operations Center, Ministry of Home Affairs; Mr. Umesh Prasad Dhakal, NRCS Executive Director, Mr. Krishna Ghimire also of NRCS; Senior Superintendent of Police Sudip Acharya – Chief of Central Police Disaster Squadron. Main organizers were led by Senior Superintendent of Armed Police Force Ram Prakash Shrestha – Commandant of APF DMTC; Mr. Surya Narayan Shrestha and Mr. Ramesh Guragain, Deputy Executive Directors of NSET.
Messages of the Chief Guest and other invited respected officials highlighted the need for a more realistic strategy in training of skilled emergency responders and expert instructors towards addressing the need of Nepal for a holistic disaster risk reduction; and that the PEER graduates will play an important contribution in the national strategy. The Chief Guest, together with the special guests, led the distribution of certificates to participants.
PEER is funded by the United States Agency for International Development / Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) since 1998.
