Vulnerability Tour for GNDR Team
NSET facilitated a Vulnerability Tour for GNDR Operations Director Mr. Terry Gibson and Asia Regional Development Officer Mr. Rouf Mohamed Abdur. The Global Network for Disaster Reduction is a major international network of non-governmental and not-for-profit organisations committed to working together to improve the lives of people affected by disasters world-wide. http://www.globalnetwork-dr.org/
The vulnerability and high earthquake risk of Kathmandu valley can be felt and observed through simply walking around few core city areas in Kathmandu. Earthquake Vulnerability Tour is a walking tour to such core areas to observe and feel the earthquake vulnerabilities. The route selected for this walk is a historical city core area Chokhachhen Galli which is the border between Ward No. 25 and 26 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC).
The route hence comprises: Bhugol Park - Indra Chowk – Chokhachhen Galli – Itum Bahal
Typical features of the locality are:
• Narrow streets consisting of mixture of old and new buildings
• Old buildings mostly constructed after 1934 earthquake and made of brick in mud and of adobe
• New buildings brick in cement and RC pillar system
• Many very narrow streets and gallis connecting houses to the main galli
• Many courtyards inside – some are still existing/ functional; some are encroached
• Population density of the area is very high – approx. 60,000 per square km
• Building use – mixed: residential + commercial
