Earthquake Safety Day Focal Points Planning Meeting with Private Sector
Nepal Risk Reduction Consortium (NRRC) along with Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), British Red Cross and NSET organized a half day Focal Points Planning Meeting with the private sector stakeholders on December 19, 2014 at Hotel Himalaya, Lalitpur on their involvement in upcoming 17thearthquake safety day activities in as many as possible areas. Participants were mostly from banking sector, FNCCI, LCCI, hotel sector, trading houses, cement companies and so on.
NRRC is taking a lead in giving training to volunteers from UNV and NRCS in technical assistance from NSET and NRCS along with focal contact persons of the private sector businesses on the importance of Drop, Cover and Hold On exercise and providing practical training to them. The volunteers will be mobilized on Jan 14 to go to the interested private sector business houses to further demonstrate DCH exercise and practically train the staff members of the private business houses to do the same on the main day of 17th ESD on Jan 16, 2015 right at 2:24 pm at their respective organizations.
Ms. Kate Alley, Policy Advisor of NRRC welcomed the participants with her welcoming remarks. Mr. Ramesh Guragain, Deputy Executive Director of NSET made presentation on an Overview of Earthquake Safety Day and need for earthquake risk reduction and preparedness. NSET volunteered on the demonstration of DCH postures to the participants. Mr. Mark South of British Red Cross facilitated on describing about preparedness video clippings and on display materials including Earthquake Go-Bag. Participants watched the DRR video clipping (Red Panda PSA) and made a tour around tables filled with display materials and Earthquake Go-Bag materials. NRCS and NSET made avail of free distribution materials to the participants.
NRRC briefed on the engagement of volunteers and seeking involvement of private sector on the range of activities and their preparation responsibilities. NRCS distributed forms to all participating organizations to get their commitment of involvement and their need on the number of volunteers they want for DCH demonstration and other activities.
Mr. Moira Reddick made her closing remarks thanking all the participants for their presence as well as requested them to be part of ESD activities to show their commitment on making the private sector disaster resilient.
NRRC is coordinating on organizing Focal Points Training on Jan 8, Volunteer Training on Jan 12 and drill demonstration and orientation at private sector organizations on Jan 14, 2015.
