Earthquake Orientation at Radio Melamchi

NSET conducted Earthquake Orientation program at Radio Melamchi, Sindupalchowk. The purpose was to help build better understanding of media team on issues of earthquake and other disasters so that radio could better serve local community people keep safe. Sindhupalchowk is a mountainous district prone to landslides, epidemics, earthquakes and many hazards, which had recently faced huge landslide disaster in Jure. NSET has partnered with Radio Melamchi located in remote area of Dubachaur, Sindhupalchowk to pay joint efforts on raising public awareness that would induce energy to take local action on reducing the disaster risks and enhancing preparedness.
The program was participated by radio team and also community people, 25 persons in total. Mr. Ramesh Guragain from NSET facilitated the session. Mr. Guragain briefed on general hazards and more specifically on earthquake risks of Nepali communities. He shared on approaches of risk reduction and enhancing preparedness; and stressed more on what to do before, during and after an earthquake. “Radio is important communication mean to help people for raising awareness”, he mentioned, and added that once people know what to do they will. Mr. Saroj Dhungana, Director of Radio Melamchi said that community people are receptive and good listener of radio programs and they would apply what they learn. Participants put their queries and also shared experiences and ideas on the issues. NSET Media Officer Laxmi Khanal highlighted the importance of such interactions. NSET professionals also visited radio station.
