I CYCLE FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY


"I Cycle for EARTHQUAKE SAFETY" slogan, heartfelt by nearly 400 cyclists of the Earthquake Safety Cycle Rally, reverberated through the intricacies of the capital valley today. As part of the 17th Earthquake Safety Day National Program, the Earthquake Safety Cycle Rally was organized by the Government of Nepal, Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), Lalitpur Sub- Metropolitan City, Kirtipur Municipality, ONUS Nepal and National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) in association with USAID, Maruti Cement, ENFO, Microtech and various other organizations.

The Earthquake Safety Cycle Rally was inaugurated by Mr. Rameshwar Dangal, Joint Secretary and Head of Disaster Management Division, MoHA. While addressing the occasion, after the completion of the cycle rally, Mr. Dangal emphasized the pressing need of raising earthquake safety awareness and enhancing earthquake preparedness of people throughout the country. He also encouraged and got the audience participating in restating a powerful oath of creating earthquake safer communities around us. Mr. Amod Mani Dixit, Executive Director, NSET, felt and shared an intense and genuine need of getting into the subconscious of people with the message of earthquake safety and preparedness techniques as the threat is so massive and inevitable.

Earlier, to start with, Mr. Yadav Koirala, Chief District Officer of Lalitpur welcomed all the participants while Chief Guest Mr. Dangal had handed over flag to Social Activist and Campaigner Mr. Bikesh Shrestha who led the rally.

The Cycle Rally started from Mangal Bazar, Lalitpur and advanced across Kumbheshwor – Sankhamul – UN Park – Bijuli Bazar – MaitiGhar – Singha Durbar – Shahid Gate – New Road – Bhugol Park –Jhochhen – Lagan Tole – Teku – Sanepa – Jhamsikhel – Pulchowk – Jawalakhel – Kumaripati and finally assembled at Mangal Bazar, Lalitpur covering a distance of around 12 Kilometer.

All the cyclists were awarded "Certificate of Participation" while ten lucky draw winners got to take their "Go Bags" home. Thanks to all the participants and the organizing teams, including Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal and various support groups and organizations, for making the Earthquake Safety Cycle Rally yet another successful milestone towards achieving more aware and earthquake safer community.
