Earthquake Safety Day Focal Points (Private Sectors/Volunteers) Training
As part of the upcoming 17th Earthquake Safety Day (ESD - 16th January, 2015) activities and with a very specific mission to propagate 5 key earthquake safety messages throughout the Nepalese private sector businesses, Nepal Risk Reduction Consortium (NRRC), Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), United Nations and National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) came together for the delivery of a half day earthquake preparedness orientation on Thursday, 8th January 2015. The program was held at one of the conference halls in the UN House, Pulchowk, Lalitpur. Besides informing on developing earthquake preparedness family action plan, preparing an emergency Go Bag for the family and following proper building codes if/when building a new home, the core objective of the day was to demonstrate/train the private sector as well as volunteer focal points on earthquake safe behavior i.e. “drop, cover and hold on” (DCH) drill exercise and walk them through the steps of earthquake response drill.
There were around sixty participants (Focal Points) from various private sector businesses as well as volunteers from the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) and NRCS actively participating in the program. The volunteer focal points, along with other trained volunteers, and after coordinating with private sector focal points, will be mobilized on 14th January to go to the interested private sector business houses to further demonstrate DCH drill exercise and practically train the staff members of the private business houses to do the same on the main day of 17th ESD on 16th January, 2015 right at 2:24 pm at their respective organizations.
