Palpa Chamber of Commerce and Industry holds talk on Earthquake Safety
NSET in association with Palpa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) organized an earthquake safety interactive presentation session at PCCI meeting hall today amidst the presence of around 50 participants. Among the present were participants from PCCI, Tansen Municipality, DUDBC, DDC, Contractor Association, HAN and PABSON as well.
PCCI President, Mr. Raju Maharjan welcomed the participants and expressed his happiness to hold the orientation program on earthquake safety. He thanked NSET for joining hands with PCCI to bring awareness program in Palpa and taking a good initiation and efforts to make earthquake safe communities in Nepal. He told that it is an urgent need to have earthquake safety program to be implemented in Palpa in coordination with all concerned stakeholders.
Mr. KalyanBista, PPP Specialist of NSET/3PERM program, made the presentation on earthquake risk of Nepal, earthquake risk reduction and preparedness practices and role and need of private sector in disaster preparedness. Mr. Amit Shrestha, PPP Specialist accompanied Mr. Bista for overall program coordination.
There were concerns from the Contractor Association for the strong need of monitoring of construction works by Municipality. He stressed that contractors are compelled to work as per the need of the house owners so that haphazard construction practices are emerging as there is no intervention from any regulatory bodies. During the interaction session, the participants raised concerns over the challenges faced by Palpa district while maintaining safer building practices. Lack of competent engineers, soil testing facility, trained masons/engineers, check and balance methodology by the municipality and finally implementing the building code were some of the major obstacles discussed during the interactive presentation. The municipality of Tansen had its own limitations while implementing the building code and a safer construction practice such as unawareness and ignorance of the local people towards earthquake risks. According to the municipality, the locals are not cooperative to comply with the building codes and the persisting perception needs to be changed by extensive and frequent dose of such earthquake awareness interactive sessions.
The program was facilitated by Mr. Dev Pachbhaiya Magar, Station Manager of Radio Shreenagar, one of the radio partners of NSET.
