22nd NSET Day, 18th June 2015: Amid the Gorkha Earthquake Response Bustle
Less than eight weeks after the M7.6 Gorkha Earthquake of 25th April 2015, National Society for Earthquake Technology (NSET) marked its 22nd Anniversary amid the rush of its earthquake response and recovery activities in full swing. As the entire nation is still trying to cope with the catastrophic impact, on this auspicious day NSET took a swift retrospective approach to review its earthquake response and recovery activities following the disaster.
After a quick group photo session and following a short history of NSET’s inception and institutionalization by Mr. Shiva B. Pradhanang, President and Mr. Shreeram S. Basnet, Board Member, Dr. Amod M. Dixit, Executive Director and General Secretary, through distance video-conferencing, emphasized the importance of team work and encouraged everyone to plan something concrete to achieve in the next three years.
Mr. Surya Narayan Shrestha, Deputy Executive Director, passionately explained NSET’s vision, mission, and objectives and also briefed on NSET’s current involvements and strategic directions. Mr. Shrestha also shared views to rebuild resilient Nepal. Another Deputy Executive Director Dr. Ramesh Guragain in his concise presentation clarified the scientific facts about the recent Gorkha Earthquake episode. He simplified the emerging facts about the earthquake intensity and the scientific views behind recurring aftershocks.
On the NSET day, team leads briefed progress reports on various fields of NSET specialized work during the period of mega disaster emergencies. Those include Search and Rescue efforts, Rapid Damage Assessment of critical facilities and other buildings, Assessment of School buildings and establishing temporary arrangements to resume schools, Capacity buildings and Trainings on Detail Damage Assessment, Emergency Relief Coordination, Shelter, Reconstruction Strategies, Information Management and Media Coordination and others which NSET is working on compiling and bring out publication shortly.
Towards the end of the half day program, there was a short video presentation regarding NSET’s Response to Gorkha Earthquake.
