Shapla Neer and NSET start joint efforts on Non-Structural Mitigation in the communities
Shapla Neer Nepal and National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) have started a joint effort on non-structural mitigation works in communities at Kathmandu – 10 and 34 Wards and Lalitpur – 12 & 22 Wards. To start up with, implementing partners on August 26 organized a half day workshop on Non-Structural Mitigation in Yala Maya Kendra, Patandhoka, Lalitpur.
Engineer from Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City Mr. Ram Kumar Dhakal on his remarks stressed on the very need to enhance preparedness. He shared the lessons learned in recent earthquakes and also highlighted the need of joint collaborative efforts on reducing the risks and get better prepared.
NSET Director for Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response Mr. Ganesh Kumar Jimee made an interactive presentation on various aspects of non-structural vulnerabilities and their mitigation. He also highlighted on earthquake preparedness measures and Dos & Don'ts during and after the earthquake.
Mr. Toyoaki Komatsu, Secretary General of Shaplaneer Japan shared Japanese experience on earthquakes and tsunami. Mr. Komatsu stressed that safe behavior can save many lives and enable to survive. He pointed on the importance of getting better prepared to lessen the potential losses.
Studies have shown that more than 50 percent of deaths are due to non-structural vulnerabilities during earthquake. And the fact is that non-structural vulnerability mitigation is possible and it doesn't cost much. There are various techniques of non-structural mitigation such as fixing, anchoring, restricting movement, providing strong ties and hooks, straps, relocating, and replacing etc.
Country Representative of Shapla Neer Nepal Ms. Maki Miyahara in her welcome note briefed on purpose of joint program while Ms. Srijana Shrestha from Shapla Neer and Ms. Omkala Khanal from NSET had discussed on program activities. 35 participants from program communities participated in the workshop.
