Community Volunteers trained on Earthquake Non-Structural Mitigation


A group of community volunteers from Ward Nos. 10 and 34 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City are now trained on various techniques of Earthquake Non Structural Mitigation. National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) and Shapla Neer Nepal conducted the three days Training of Trainee (ToT) program for the participants from ward number 10 and 34 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City in the date of 28-30 September, 2015.

Ms. Goma Baral, a participant from Baneshwor community shared; this training has been very useful and encouraging for participants more specifically for the women. Sarita Rai, representative from Kathmandu metropolitan city urged participants to apply the skills of training in daily practical life. She committed to pay efforts through ward committee in raising public awareness on safety. Altogether 24 participants (20 females and 4 males) were trained during the training. Participants were from Community Disaster Risk Management Committee (CDMC), Urban Health volunteer, Civil Society, Social mobilizer of ward 10 and 34 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. They were taught on the cause of earthquake and its risk in Nepal along with the preparedness activities. The program mainly focused in the non-structural hazard and its mitigation on the practical basis. The participants also mitigated the non-structural items of a school as their practical exercise. Since it was a ToT, the participants also acquired the knowledge on how to deliver the lesson in the community.

Country Representative of Shapla Neer Nepal Ms. Maki Miyahara expressed her belief that community volunteers are the mean to propagate the message of safety and encourage people towards safe behavior.

Participants at the end of training added the importance of such skills in our daily life as well as in case of disaster emergencies.
