18th Earthquake Safety Day marked in Chitwan
To mark 18th Earthquake Safety Day, a rally walked through the main city areas of Bharatpur city of Chitwan with banners and placards with messages of earthquake safety. Participants from district government offices, BharatpurSub-Metropolitan City, Security Agencies, Engineers’ Association, Red Cross, Nepal Scouts, Mason Groups, NGO's, political parties, journalists, and community organizations took part in the rally.
The rally then concluded in the formal program in the seminar hall, Chitwan Sub-Metropolitan Office. The program was chaired by Binod Prakash Singh, Chief District Officer, Chitwan where representatives of different political parties, Engineers’ Association, Builders Associations, Mason Groups were present. The Chief and Executive Officer of the Bharatpur Sub-Metropolitan City, Mahesh Baral commenced the formal program delivering welcome speech. The program then progressed with presentations and speeches from representatives of different governmental and non-governmental bodies.

Sunil Kumar Thakur, Division Head, DUDBC, Chitwan spoke on the cause of earthquake and interrelated that with the formation of Nepal, thus showing inevitability of earthquake in our country. He explained the risk associated with Nepal. He focused the importance of earthquake resistant constructions to build earthquake safe communities by comparing the fatalities caused after big earthquakes in underdeveloped country Haiti and a developed country, Chili that suffered similar Earthquakes. He, thus, implied the importance of building code implementation to build earthquake safe communities in Nepal. Moreover, he highlighted various models recently announced by Nepal Government to build earthquake resistant buildings in the rural areas of Nepal.
Bishnu Lal Marharjan shared some words on behalf of Contractors’ Association of Chitwan. He was grateful that Nepal Government announced different models of earthquake resistant buildings but he urged the concerned authority to provide the cost estimates associated with those models. He also focused the difficulties they had to incur due to unavailability of fuels and pleaded the chief district officer to help their cause.
Ishwori Prasad Kaudal, President, Nepal Engineers Association, Chitwan urged practicing engineers to ensure earthquake resistant designs. He praised the organizers for making the program such a success.
From the Chair, Binod Prakash Singh, Chief District Officer, Chitwan revived the sufferings Nepali society had to bear after the disastrous Gorkha Earthquake and pledged everybody to help build earthquake resilient societies. He thanked everyone for becoming a part of the program and making it very successful.
