18th Earthquake Safety Day marked in Dolakha
18th Earthquake Safety Day has been marked in Dolakha, one of the most-hit districts by Gorkha Earthquake with awareness activities. A rally walked from Tudikhel along various parts of the city and turned to mass meeting (Konsabha) at Satdobato of Charikot. Oficials and participants from various district level government offices, Bhimeshwor Municipality, Security Forces, Political leaders, students, journalists, I/NGOs and local peoples were joined in the event.
This program was organized by Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC) - Division office of Dolakha. Chief from different government offices expressed their views, plans and programs on promoting earthquake safety and earthquake resistant building construction practices. Er. Suresh Raut from Bhimeshawor Municipality highlighted on the need of following provisions of Nepal Building Code to ensure safer construction. He further described about causes of earthquakes in the context of Nepal. He also cited poem “aakha chimli herna ni garo” written by Mr. Khadga Sen Oli from NSET and described it.
”Mr. Jagadish Aryal, acting LDO described about the effect of earthquake and necessity of earthquake resistant construction. Mr. Olakha Bahadur Ale, acting CDO briefed on earthquake’s devastating effects which is mainly because of poor construction
practices. He further added that the same magnitude of earthquake have less damage in some developed countries like Japan but it is devastating in Nepal.
Addressing the mass meeting, Mr. Udhav Prasad Pokharel,President of Federtation of Nepali Journalists, Dolakha mentioned, “ESD program will be triumph only when we all are capable of earthquake risk reduction, when our building are earthquake resistant and when we have knowledge about preparedness.
