Disaster Resilient Communities in Nepal by 2050

International kick-off conference on Urban Disaster Resilience in Kathmandu


An International Kick-off Conference has started today in Kathmandu to launch a collaborative pilot program for the “Enhancement of Urban Disaster Resilience through Activities of Local Participatory Platform”. To start with, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed by Bharat Mani Pandey, CEO Lalitpur Sub-Metroplitan City, Rohit Raj Pokharel, CEO, Karyabinayak Municipality, Surya Narayan Shrestha, Deputy Executive Director, NSET, Nagendra Raj Sitaula, Director, Central for Disaster Studies, Institute of Engineering and Shigeo Fujii, Dean Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, Kyoto Univesity (GSGES).

The objective of this joint program is to enhance of urban disaster resilience through activities of local participatory platform. The pilot programs will be implemented in Kathmandu (Nepal) and Yangon (Myanmar). Kathmandu study will focus on earthquake disasters, while Yangon study will focus on earthquake and cyclone disasters. The two cities will establish a local platform where all stakeholders will work and discuss together to understand and assess the disaster risk of the city, estimate probable damages, propose policies, and make action plans. 
In the opening session, Prof. Kenji Okazaki from Graduate School of Global Environmental studies (GSGES), Kyoto University briefed on program highlights. Dignitaries and experts addressed the session on various aspects to explore and cover within the scope of this initiative. This one day conference program has planned for 8 Keynote sessions followed by the group-works and group-presentations.
