EERI Housner Fellows Workshop in Municipalities:
Under EERI Housner Fellows program, workshops on Building Code Adoption, Implementation and Compliance conducted at three different municipalities in Kathmandu valley and in the districts. First workshop was held in Lalitpur Sub Metropolitan City on February 8, 2016. Total 48 participants from different professional sector such as Engineers, Masons, social mobilizers, political leaders and social leaders participated and contributed in the workshop held at Himalayan Hotel.
Similar workshops were held at Bhimeshwor Municipality, Dolakha and Kamalamai Municipality, Sindhuli on February 11, 2016. There was active participation of different stakeholders on Building Code Implementation on both the municipalities. Total 50 participants among from various stakeholders participated in Bhimeshwor workshhop while there were 40 participants in in Kamalamai workshop.
This series of workshops was organized by Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (ERRI) Housner Fellows Program which is truly global and diverse team. Each housner fellow members represent their country and the members for current group of 2014 to 2016 are from Nepal, Pakistan, Haiti, Canada, U.S., U.K. and India.
EERI’s mission is to reduce earthquake risk by: Advancing the science and practice of earthquake engineering, improving understanding of the impact of earthquakes and advocating comprehensive and realistic measures for reducing earthquake effects. And the main objective of this Workshop is to study of the current situation, problem, challenges and the opportunity for the effective implementation of building code in local level. NSET and Municipality where workshop have been conducted believe that the study will help the municipality to review its current system of building permit and building code enforcement and to make improvements based on the recommendation.
