CBDRM: Media Discussion on Earthquake Non-Structural Mitigation
A media discussion held on why and how to do Earthquake Non-Structural Mitigation (NSM) on Feb 17, 2016 in Kathmandu! Unsafe buildings are the obvious killer in earthquakes but how about stake of Non-Structural items in causing human injuries and deaths was the focus of the discussion! Presenting on the core theme of discussion, Senior Structural Engineer from NSET Mr. Dev Kumar Maharjan pictured the impacts of Gorkha Earthquake in non structural items in residential and office as well as public buildings. He briefed on techniques to fix the non structural items so as to secure them from getting damaged and or causing damages while ground shakes.
Country Representative of Shaplaneer Nepal Ms. Maki Miyahara in her welcome note stressed on importance of working with women groups on NSM approaches and methods for improving safety. Briefing on key issues, NSET Advocacy Manager Mr. Khadga Sen Oli highlighted the fact that building structures causing massive proportion of human deaths in earthquakes and its significant stake be of Non-Structural items. This half-day Media Discussion on “Earthquake Non-Structural Mitigation” was jointly organized by Shaplaneer and NSET with the support of Embassy of Japan.
Group of journalists from DRR reporting and production desks of various media agencies and also DRR professionals interacted and shared their experiences, views and queries on the occasion. Ms. Sahina Shrestha from Nepali Times Weekly stressed on the need to enhance community resilience through community participation. Madan Paudyal from Ujyaalo FM advised for conveying such life saving techniques to communities through schools. Mr. Sunil Koirala, Producer and Presenter of TV Talk Show “Talk of the Town” stressed on need of policy guidance to promote earthquake safety processes at community level.
On the occasion, Ms. Srijana Shrestha from Shapla Neer and Ms. Omkala Khanal from NSET had discussed on program activities.
