HOPE Course kicks off in Islamabad
The National Society for Earthquake Technology – Nepal (NSET) in cooperation with National Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Network (NHEPRN) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)/National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM)-Government of Pakistan is conducting the Hospital Preparedness for Emergencies (HOPE) Course from October 17-20, 2016, in Islamabad.
There are a total of 23 participants representing various health facilities of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Muzaffarabad-Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK), Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province, and districts under KP: Charsadda, Chitral, Mansehra, Nowshera, Shangla, Kohat, D.I. Khan; Landi Kotal under FATA, Gilgit Baltistan, and Rescue 1122 in KP. After completing this training, participants are expected to bring their experience and learnings to develop or strengthen their respective hospital’s emergency preparedness and response plans.
Dr. Muneer Mangrio, Director General, NHEPRN, underscored the need for common understanding on concepts and principles of health emergency management. HOPE will be very instrumental in building the capacities of health emergency professionals of Pakistan. Col. Khuda Bakhs, Director Response of NDMA, and Mr. Yousaf, Deputy Director Response also paid a visit to the HOPE course. In his address, Col Khuda Bakhs, encouraged the country’s experienced and trained health professionals, such as doctors, nurses, paramedics, to become catalysts that will increase Pakistan’s self-reliance in serving and addressing the national and local needs in emergency preparedness and response, despite the lack of capacities and resources.
This HOPE Course is being implemented under the Program for Enhancement of Emergency Response (PEER) Stage 4 (2014-2019), funded by the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) of the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The second HOPE Course in Pakistan under PEER Stage 4 is planned to be held on October 24-27, 2016 in Karachi, targeting hospitals within Sindh Province.
PEER Stage 4 aims to continue the program successes from previous PEER stages. For PEER program implementation in Pakistan, NSET is working with NDMA, PEER nodal agency, for overall guidance and leadership. NIDM has been designated by NDMA to form and chair the PEER Steering Committee in Pakistan. Focal partner organizations are: NHEPRN for HOPE Course; Punjab Emergency Service/Rescue 1122/Emergency Services Academy for Medical First Responder (MFR) and Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue (CSSR) courses; and Pakistan Red Crescent Society for Community Action for Disaster Response (CADRE) course. For overall program coordination of PEER Stage 4 in Pakistan, NSET is also in partnership with Network of Disaster Management Practitioners (NDMP).
