Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience Impact Fund (IHRR), Durham University and National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) have launched a joint program "Empowering Women through Disaster Risk Reduction (EDRR)". The program is being implemented in two communities from Lalitpur district at Bhainse, Bagmati Rural Municipality – Ward No.3 and Khokana, Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) – Ward No. 21.

To start with, an interaction program was held in Rudrayani Temple, Khokana, LMC 21 on August 16, 2018. The event begun with project brief focusing on planned activities and expected outcomes and then discussed on Risk Perception Survey including survey procedure, validate the outcome of the risk perception survey by the participants and enable the community to select, identity and prioritize existing risk within the community.

Also, a Risk Perception Survey was carried out using the power point presentation to display the questions with multiple choice for each question. Participants answered the questions by choosing one of the options with a remote voting pad. The outcome of the survey was displayed to the participants after about half an hour of the survey. The participants felt delighted to see the immediate outcome of the Risk Perception Survey which they found unanimously agreeable.

The second phase of the program was an orientation program on community level disaster risk reduction. The interactive session sensitized the participants on the possibility of assessing the Hazard, Risk, Vulnerability and Capacity of the community to plan for disaster risk reduction. The participants got basic information regarding process of initiating community actions for disaster risk reduction.

Speaking at the program, Mr. Rabindra Maharjan, Chairperson of LMC-21 clarified the main purpose of the program and highlighted, "since all the family members are taken care by the women, it is very helpful if they are involved in such efforts to have better awareness on disasters and better knowledge to tackle the risks". Ms. Helen Shobha Maharjan, Woman Member of LMC-21, expressed happiness to note how women can make contributions in disaster risk reduction and how women can be empowered in a community.

Altogether 42 (4 male and 38 female) participants including Ward Chair and women members of Ward No. 21 of LMC, members of Mothers’ Group (Ama Samuha) and lead members of local community participated in the program.
